Not ncessarily boring...Philosophy and basis of Christianity

Okay...here's where we can discuss Christianity Whether you are Christian or not, even if you hate Christianity (no name calling). Here's the place to argue philosophically (or not) about Christians and their faith.

Isn't there a thread about this already? Oh well. I'm not Christian. Not even Christened and have only been in a church twice. I'm not one of those people who says "There is no God," because I can't understand how the world can exist if there is a God, or if there isn't. I don't think that makes sense at all to anyone but me. Oh well. But yay! Philosophy!

I'm going to pose some questions...

Why are people always searching for more? Why can they not be happy just to be? How can there be no point to living, yet looking at the rest of the universe how can there be a point?

What does everyone think?

Ive been wondering the same thing...and good questions. People can talk and debate about where we come from until your heads spins and you pass out, but you wont get any true answers until you die. And it is interesting to wonder and debate but the conclusion is always going in circles. So we should all just have fun and enjoy life while its here.
Edit: unless its debating that makes you happy. Then yeah..

sorry Judaism isn't even partially correct according to Christianity...but the real truth is that every religion has some element of truth (maybe every religion as every element of truth).

Hmm, aside from the offshoot discussion, do you mean the original what religion are you thread?

Narsil's Master, I don't want to be rude, but I think that you could be a bit more tact. Speak the truth in love.

markedel: is this the same old thing about how Christianity is all just love and law that you mean? Or something else? Anyway, Christians and Jews (now that I know that term isn't rude ) both worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, correct? But of course, I speak of fundemental Christianity, and you speak of conservative Judaism; whereas when I speak of Judaism I talk about Orthodox Judaism.

Of course, along the same lines, Islam is also partially correct according to Christianity, in that they worship the God of Abraham. Which brings up a question I've wondered for a while: What religion did Arabians follow before Mohammed came along? Is this religion basically dead today?

Most Arabs in Egypt belonged to the Coptic Christian Church....a sect or rite of the Catholic Church. It is still in existence but mainly in Alexandria Egypt. I'm not sure if Arabians in Arabia were Christian or Jewish or still had their native religions. I've always wanted to know that!

Do you mean they were at the time, or they are now?

Most Middle-Easterners are Muslim; but before Mohammed, I don't know. Christians have always been in the minority (not counting the Christian Roman Empire and the Dark Ages, in both cases the Christianity of many of them was questionable). Also, Muslims believe that Ishmael was the Chosen one of God, not Isaac, I believe. No doubt their predessescors (sp?) also believed that.

Before Mohammed, the middle east was mainly a form of paganism. What mohammed did was declare that only one of their gods (allah, the moon god) was truly god and that only one of their idols (the kaaba) was worthy of worship. He basically consolidated all the god-sects of the old religion with a great deal of influence from christian and jewish thought.

im christian and the thing i dont like about it is all they say you do is sin sin sin. my god... i mean they can at least say we did something good rather than tell us all the time we're bad people and we have to go to church every sunday to go to heaven. (oops used gods name in vain... broke one commandment)

i see no point in being catholic if everything you do is bad.

Just going to church every Sunday won't get you to heaven.

Evenstar1400, I'm Catholic too and sometimes, yes I feel as if all the Church ever preaches is how much everyone sins....I really think it is the priest and his personality that really makes going to Mass worthwhile. I have been to several different parrishes and I only like to go to ones where the priest focuses on how we as Christians can make the world a better place. Sure we sin, who doesn't? and I think it is good to point that out every now and then along with the fact that Jesus died for our sins and that sinning doesn't really please him. But the topic of sin isn't the end-all be-all to the sermon...and no I don't beleive that going to church is the way to go if you want to get to heaven. I know lots of people who only go because thier parents make them...they don't pay attention at all and I think that is worse than not going at all.

Well, I do know that the Coptic Catholic Church is mainly still in Alexandria...I saw a show about it a while back. For those few hundred years before Islam became dominate in the Middle EAst,(315-c.600) there was probably alot of pagan worship still going on...most likely in areas other than where the Jews were. Christianity had just been legalized in the Roman Empire in 315-316 by Constantine...so I think it was a time of evangelization before Islam was introduced in the Middle EAst. I don't think the Christians got very far with it in that area...they mainlyspread west with it.
