Not necessarily. There are many terms for users of magic. If someone practices Wicca, they are a witch no matter their gender.

In the world of fantasy, you can craft your own rules. JK Rowling has determined that male magic practitioners are wizards, and females are witches. It's not incorrect at all, and actually, a lot of fantasy novels use this template.

I'd go on... but you're not going to post here anyway.

In terms of British folklore and using the Autherian legands Merlin is a wizard, so it would make sense that Harry is a wizard.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

So it's for witches and wizards. And throughout the book, Harry's been called a wizard, as have all the other magical boys. It all depends on what the author wants to call them, really. There isn't an "Official" name for a male witch, or if there is, there are a lot of others that are used as well.

In a fantasy novel, the creator can choose whatever terminology she wants.

Yeah - But since Harry is called 'wizard' and Hermione 'witch', and since the school is 'for Witchcraft and Wizardry'... the conclusion is quite obvious. Plus, there's no referance of any 'warlock'.
And as many said JKR can call her characters whatever she wants, and it'd be fine. It's fantasy.

First: as said many times, JKR can do whatever she wants in her own world and twist the words and meanings. So all of this debate is quite...*shrug*

Also - why would they all be witches and warlocks though? Can't they all be wizards? (Or whatever the word for female wizard is... if there is one)

This isn't exactly like Wheel of Time where the magic works differently for men and women.

Why shouldn't they be able to learn the same things? Calling someone a witch, wizard, warloc, mage, magi, mystic, seer, or any other volume of names is just... well... different, some times gender based, ways of calling someone ONE thing: a person able to use magic.

I agree with Tessar. She could call all the characters Applecakes, and they could all use the same type of magic. What's in a name?

Part of the process of writing a story is determing what is reality for that workd that story is set in. And for the world of Harry Potter, female practitioners of magic are witches, and male practitioners are wizards. It's and interesting choice of titles, but it may not mean much other than that there are two different names for the same thing.
It's not like Earthsea where witch has a decidedly negative connotation as one who deals in evil and primitive magic while wizard means a man who has had the best training that Earthsea has to offer.

Come on, me9996, what are you, like 9 years old?

Witch, Wizard, Warlock, Sorcerer, Magician, Enchanter(ess), Whatever. They're all essentially synonyms, with denotations that are slightly different. The ones that do imply gender aren't particularly picky - a Warlock can be a Male Witch, or a Male Wizard, or a Male Sorcerer, or a Male Demon!. A witch can be 'any woman with magical powers', which is certainly a good enough opposite-gender synonym for 'wizard', which is 'one who practices magic'.

Gah. Get over it already.

Perhaps you missed the fact that Me9996 didn't mean to post three times. I've seen it happen to other posters, so I personally am going to give him or her the benefit of the doubt.

If you two would bother to check, Me9996 is at least thirteen, not nine, assuming he didn't lie about his age. Considering my own posting history, I can easily believe that he might be thirteen.

Lets all calm down a bit here.

Thank you for protecting me!
But where did you find my age? (Oh yes, my profile )
And I still don't know which computer was bugged! (How did I post three times!?)
