I personally think that a chatroom would take away from the board, since people would spend a lot of time there instead. On a discussion board, you can post something and it will stay there for a very long time, and people from all different time zones can respond. What you say in a chat room, though, is gone in an instant.

No person can be in there 24/7, and we can't really have it unwatched at any time, since there's such a huge potential for abuse.

That is a very good point but I have to say that, on Slipstream, even though we have approximately 2000 members, there are times when no-one posts for sometime. Yet there are always people in the chatroom and we have a lot of fun there.

Yes it is true no-one can be there 24/7 but there are people who are online very nearly as often. I'm online myself, all night, everynight, except for Tuesdays. It's just a thought.

You can't have as intelligent discussions in Chat rooms, I don't think Tolkien Trail needs one. If you want to talk to tolkien fans though, TheOneRing.net's chat room is good

as said earlier the conversation about the works of tolkien would be exhausted too quickly. theres only so much you can say on a certain topic

Yes I have AIM actually but I don't use it very often.
