*puff, puff* sorry I'm late, I've been kinda busy ... yes, "Letters" is fascinating and gives lots of insights into his life. Highly recommended! There's some really funny comments about Americans in there, too - I think he thought them pretty uncouth *picks her teeth*

Yeah, isn't there a bit where he puzzles over the usage of "Gee Whiz!"

That's such an interesting question, I did a Web search through Google. Am still going through the results, but one result thus far is that T.H. White, who was younger than JRRT, had no association with the Inklings (per The Mythopoeic Society). (Check out the home page too, via the link at the bottom; this is a terrific source.)

Also, White seems to have been associated with Cambridge, though am not sure of the details; that might have put him completely out of JRRT's universe.

Have you not come to your present state by your own actions, and will also go hence according to your own actions? Anger towards another is just as if someone wishing to hit another person takes hold of glowing coals, or a heated iron-rod, or of excrement. And, in the same way, if the other person is angry with you, what can he do to you? Can he destroy your virtue and your other good qualities? He too has come to his present state by his own actions and will go hence according to his own actions. Like an unaccepted gift or like a handful of dirt thrown against the wind, his anger will fall back on his own head."

An American boy sent him a letter about the Hobbit, in which he included the phrase Gee Whiz! was included. Tolkien sent a letter to Christopher which included part of that letter. At the bottom, he said, "It's nice to find that little American boys do really still say 'Gee Whiz'."

Of course, but it was when Lalaith spoke of Sweden when I started to think about the Norse mythology

As hobinator said in an earlier reply, the third disk in the extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring DVD package has a nice bit of information regarding Tolkien.

I think it is an important and funny fact that Tolkien first concidered Middle-earth to be England and then dropped this idea completely.
Do you all remember the introduction in the LOTR? (if it is included in the books you have). There he mentiones that LOTR has not allegory at all.

The elves sailing West = Emigrating Europeans who go to America?
The War of the Ring, The Western countries versus the Eastern ones = The Cold War?
The Two Towers = World Trade Center?

Though LotR was written before WTC was even concidered to be built, and I think it was written before the Cold War as well.
No, even though there are somethings which ressembles real events, Tolkien didn't have any allegories at all.

If George W. Bush is Manwë, then the Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeldt must be Tulkas. Vice Secretary of Defence Wolfowitz is Oromë. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Colin Powell could be Ulmo.
Of course, many people would claim that Bush is not Manwë, but Melkor

And by the way, nice avatar Lalaith! That white dress of Éowyn really look good on her.

I think America is more like those elves that were really good at making the rings and were talked into making the rings of power by vile despots who happened to be enemies of their enemies. but the american elves were decieved later when the weapons (rings) were used against the elves allies which lead of course to the american elves bombing the crap out of the far east of middle earth and calling them all "terrorist orcs" and "an axis of evil".

O this thread has turned around quite remarkably.

I have a crazy idea.

Why dont we devide Earth to resemble the various places in Middle Earth?

Like Gondor could be Eurorope. Mordor - Afghanistan extending till Iraq, and Pakistan on the East.

I think i will try to do this.
Let us all prepare our maps, and share it.

Lets see who gets the best one.

Then the place where I live would be Minas Tirith and I would be the steward or the queen Tar-Lalaith. (Not that my village is that big, but because I live there it should be the capital).

I would consider him as Melkor too. But he would consider himself beeing Manwe.
But anyway, I don't want to have a politic discussion about George W. Bush. that could upset some people.
