tobacco and pipe weed

in the hobbit it is mentioned that bilbo smokes tobacco, in a couple places i can think of. do you think it was meant to be pipe weed or whatever, and perhaps tolkien didnt want to mention that yet, or whatever, or does anyone know about that?

It's some type of nicotine. Check "Concerning Hobbits"

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by your second question.

I think katya is referring to the fact that the herb smoked by the hobbits is tobacco in The Hobbit and pipeweed in LoTR. In any event, its the same thing. Tolkien uses different names frequently for the same thing or person (Orcs and Goblins another prime example). It goes along with the diversity he created among the peoples of middle earth, their languages, their customs, etc. I used to find it annoying but I have come to treasure this unique aspect of the professor's writing as part of the depth of imagination that is ever present in these sagas.

The hobbit wasn't orginally set in Middle Earth, later on it was grafted, via some editing onto the timeline of LOTR and I suppose the Silmarillion. The differences in language are because of what each book is. One's a children's tale of "fairy" while the other is a history of middle-earth.

Gollum

*bump*

Am I the only one who thinks Merry and Pippin were a little stoned when they were chilling on the ruins of Isengard? And yes, in reference to the book. What, exactly, IS "pipeweed"? Like maybe a cross between pot 'n tobacco, perhaps...

Hobbits don't need pot to act silly, particularly Pippin.

In the prologue it says pipe weed is "probably as species of nicotania which is tobacco.

They did enjoy their beer tho

According to the Hobbit, Middle Earth is basically Earth ages ago... we have different smokables why can't they?

What you say is true Witch King (BTW I like your avatar)

JRRT enjoyed his pipe. I don't think he got high.

I think people are reading way too much into it.

New Line bought the rights to make the movie but MGM has distribution rights. PJ wants to do it, but they have to wait till the lawyers do their thing.
