The True Story of Hansel and Gretel

I am currently reading a haunting story called The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy. It is really good so far. Here's the blurb on the back:

Quote:
In the last months of the Nazi occupation of Poland, two children are left by their father and stepmother to find safety in a dense forest. Because their real names will reveal their Jewishness, they are renamed "Hansel" and "Gretel." They wander in the woods until they are taken in by Magda, an eccentric and stubborn old woman called "witch" by the nearby villagers. Magda is determined to save them, even as a German officer arrives in the village with his own plans for the children.
Read it, it is wonderfully written and truly haunting.

That's interesting, I love the story of Hansel and Gretel.
It was written in the 1800s by the Grimm brothers, so the story of the Jewish children were not what they based their story on.
But it does seem to be very similar.

they are . but not in "the true story of hansel and gretal". which is saying by its title, that the story is about a 'Real' Hansel and Gretal, not the exact ones though, just ones like them.

Well of course, it's a fictional story, but it's almost like a true story, because in the book you see what it was really like, not the sugar coated stuff you see in the movie "Life is Beautiful."

I finished the book, and when I was done, the only word I could say was "wow." It was amazingly well written and I recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of reading about gory stuff and vulgar words.
