Pictures of Numenorean Ships

Hi Folks,

Just dropping by to see if any of you can recommend some links where I could find artistic interpretations of Numenorean ships. Textual descriptions would be handy, too, as I'm accross the Atlantic from my library. Nothing urgent or necessary, though, but I thought maybe the odd person might have some wealth of information to share around here...

Cheers,

One artistic interpretation I know of is this pic by Ted Nasmith. But you don't see much details there.

There is also a pic by John Howe on the cover of my copy of HoME 12, but I'm not able to put up a link right now.

Is there a paperback edition out? My hardbound edition is uniform with the rest of the HoME.

Ckeck this out: http://www.foolofatook.com/

It's a picture I really like of the Frodo and company at the Grey Havens. There's the nice ship behind them.

My HoME series is all paperback editions from HarperCollins, and they all have a cover illustration by John Howe.

Thanks for the images, folks.

Artanis: yeah, too bad there's not more detail. Oh well. Sort of looks like an ivory longship, neh?

Bombadilo: Isn't that an Elvish ship, what with it sailing from the Grey Havens and all?

If anybody knows of a textual description, do let me know too!

Thanks again,

That's a beautiful picture IMO. Wow.

I've got to get out of here, just give me One Good Year!

I had thought of that, but ignored it. It looked just like Artanis' example at the time.

That's actually the pic that's now at Took Talk's old mainsite(or whatever it's called). It's rather appropriate too.

Strider

I actually envision them as becoming quite sophisticated sailing ships - along the lines of the 3-masted, full-rigged ships of the late 18th / early 19th centuries. An open long boat would get quite uncomfortable for ocean-crossings - and for spending years away from home. Large ships of this type (think HMS Victory - EDIT: uh... without the canons! But maybe some kind of ship-born "seige engine" or other weapon) would be particularly suited to carrying 800-1000 or so exiles each (albeit in cramped quarters) under Elendil and his sons.

Perhaps these types of ships were first built by Aldarion - and continued in use for the remainder of Numenor's years. So perhaps the very first crossings from Numenor were in simpler ships - but the need for greater ships was seen - and probably acted upon.

Here it is: Cover of HoME 12
I think this is an illustration of the unfinished story about Tal-Elmar, where Númenoreans were coming to Middle Earth and the people there feared them.
