A boatswain, often (at least since 1868) phonetically spelled and pronounced bosun, is a warrant officer who is foreman of a ship's crew and is also third mate.

Originally, onboard a sailing ship such as a man-of-war or a galleon, the boatswain was in charge of a ship's anchors, cordage, colors, deck crew and the ship's boats. It remains his duty to summon the crew to work by a whistle known as boatswain's pipe.

In the Royal Navy, in so far as that task did not fall to the master at arms he would also administer physical punishments, both informally with his boatswain's cane on the boys (and Girls ) or with a rope's end on the adult sailors, at his own accord, and formally on deck on captain's or court martial's orders, usually birching or wielding the cat o' nine tails; in a large crew he could delegate this to one or more boatswain's mate(s), who might alternate after each dozen of lashes.

By tradition and superstition, only the boatswain is allowed to whistle while on board, lest an unwitting sailor "whistle up the wind". Hence the phrase, "Only fools and boatswains..."

The use of the Boatswains Call in English ships can be traced back with certainty to the days of the
Crusades, AD 1248. In former days it was worn in English ships as an honoured badge of rank,
probably because it had always been used of passing orders. As long ago as 1485 it was worn as
the badge of the Lord High Admiral of England and was worn by his successor in office up to
1562.
Thereafter it was used throughout the English fleets for passing Orders, and since 1671 it has
always been known as the Boatswains Call. Nowadays the “Boatswain’s Call and Chain” is the
badge of office of “The Chief Boatswains Mate, Quartermaster and Boatswains Mates”. In the Sea
Cadet Corps, the office holder would be the “Quartermaster” and the “Boatswains Mate”.

Except for Kor's rank is higer than the Bosun's

Kor is among the officers now, where as the bosun is just in charge of the mates.

Different structures. (I think)

BB, thats to USE a whistle. The metal kind. Not whistle with ones own mouth, hell, when I was sailing, whistling was an artform. As was humming and singing.

I figured that'd be the best option for her, since she won't be quick getting around below decks, or up the rigging. But she'll easily wiegh anchor.
