Come play my game

Art by Keith Parkinson

THE NECROMANCER

It is a dark, cold autumn night in the Wilds between the Kingdom of Ryth and the Western Sea. In the common room of the Wayfarer's Inn it is more crowded than usual, and the patrons are doing their best to forget that the coming winter promises to be a harsh one. A fire blazes merrily on the hearth, and a minstrel is singing songs more suited to summer than fall. The sound of his lute is barely audible above the raucous laughter and conversation, but his high, clear voice penetrates the din with the skill of one who is used to playing noisy taverns.

Suddenly the door to the inn swings open, and a fierce gust of cold wind blows several candles out. The fire complains on the hearth, and glancing up, the minstrel ceases his song. Slowly the room quiets down as every head turns toward the door. Standing in the doorway is a black-robed man, his face obscured beneath the shadow of his hood. In his right hand he carries a blackthorn staff, the mark of a wizard. But that is not what has stopped all discussion in the room, turning every head. For there is a wolf at his heels, and it waits for the stranger to enter before obediently following him, as tame as any dog.

Several patrons stumble from the benches they have been sitting on, knocking over crocks and mugs in an effort to put as much distance between themselves and the wolf as they can. Unconcerned, the stranger slowly steps to the center of the room, studying the faces of the crowd. In the glow of the firelight, you can glimpse eldritch signs and symbols tatooed upon his face.

"I am Virendor," the stranger announces to the room. "I have come from a far country in search of a fabled treasure. Now at last I have discovered its whereabouts. But I need help to obtain it. I have heard tell that there are hardy adventurers to be found in this inn. I will pay handsomely. Who will join me in my quest?"

No one speaks. All eyes are on the stranger and his wolf, some filled with astonishment, others with fear, and still others with distrust. Just then, the owner of the Wayfarer's Inn steps forward, prodded by his plump and pretty wife.

"Er. . . sir . . . Mr. Virendor," he stammers, "we, um, don't allow beasts--"

One glare from the stranger cuts him off. The wolf, which has made itself comfortable beside the hearth, looks up and growls softly, as if it understood the frightened man's words.

"Innkeeper," says Virendor. "I and my beast require a room."

"Y-yes sir, right this way."

"In a moment. First I have something more to tell all of you. On my way here I passed through the Kingdom of Ryth. You might be interested to know that old King Sarketh IV has died under, shall we say, mysterious circumstances. His half-brother Meged, called The Necromancer, now rules in his place, and rumour has it he is raising an army to invade your land. I leave for Ryth tomorrow morning, if anyone cares to accompany me."

With that he turns and motions for the Innkeeper to lead him up to his room, and the two of them climb the creaking stairs up to the second floor and out of sight, the wolf following close behind like a faithful pet.

The room becomes abuzz with conversation again, only this time there is only one subject, and the voices are loud with fear and distress, not merriment. The Wilds have long been a refuge from the evils of civilization, and many people of all kinds have made it their home. Men, Elves, Dwarves and Halflings had all lived there together in peace for centuries. Now their land was in the gravest of danger. What were they to do?

"The people of Ryth will never go along with it," you hear one old man say from his seat beside the fire. "They will honour the thousand-year old treaty King Damon signed with the Elf-king to end the War of Supremacy."

He is of course speaking of the struggle between Elves and Men for sovereignty in these lands. Many had fallen in that war, and both sides had suffered greatly. Some of the other patrons nod in agreement. No one wants another war, least of all the people of Ryth, who have enjoyed a millenium of peace and prosperity during their friendship with the Elves. But not everyone is so optimistic. Meged has an evil reputation both in the Wilds and in Ryth itself. Long ago he was accused of maleficent sorcery and banished to a far country. It was only recently that he had been reconciled with his half-brother, the late King Sarketh IV.

You ponder all of this. The Wilds are your home. If there is any threat to it, real or imagined, is it not your duty to investigate it? Accompanying the stranger Virendor to Ryth could not only mean adventure and plunder. It could prove an opportunity to obtain useful information regarding Meged's plans and the size and strength of his forces. Having a wizard as an ally could also prove useful. But can you really trust this dark stranger? Perhaps it would be better to go it alone.

Finally, curiosity gets the better of you and you decide to at least find out what the stranger has come to these lands in search of. You can always decide to go to Ryth on your own later on.

To begin playing this game,go to Virendor's room and hear what he has to say.

Captain Tarpols:

Captain Tarpols,

I visited Gryffindor Tower on December 6 (before reading your ad); I even posted! but there has been no response or interaction since my post, so...

I think I'll stick with Entmoot and Illyria -- the Shakespeare site of Elanor, Lea-something, and -- oh, I hate typing this name --"Fat Middle" -- there it's out, and I feel very rude.

It's a good site for anyone who likes Shakespeare! I haven't found any others on ezboard.

Re: Help Save A Board's Life!

 Lol, Elysha! I feel kind of rude typing that name out too.
Anyway, in case I haven't said so before, everyone come to Illyria! If you don't think you like Shakespeare, try some, and I think you'll find that you do like it!
