Hey guys, I started a thread in the Middle Earth forum where we're discussing the letters of JRR Tolkien. I wanted to put up a little notice in our Cafe in case you guys are interested!

The book is "The Letters of JRR Tolkien", and it contains 354 of his letters (starting when he was 22 and going until 4 days before his death) and lots and lots of interesting information!

Hope to see you there!

Oof . . . I went out to pad out my sweater collection, and ended up sitting around in a pub with a friend talking for 8 hours. Great, but a bit exhausting!

The original Chinese settlement you mention - did those Han Chinese speak Mandarin? Or did the use of Mandarin only come in strongly starting in 1945?
No, the original settlers were from Fujian Province and spoke Min-nan (Southern Min). Mandarin was imposed after 1945, with kids forced to wear signs with things like "Taiwanese Dog" written on them if they so much as spoke a word in class.

Even though it's spoken by about 70% of the older generation, it- like the Aboriginal languages and the language of the Hakka minority(Kejia hua)- is declining- fewer young people speak it fluently.

Funny thing is, as part of the localisation program, when I first got here they were just bringing it back on TV- the commercials for things like athlete's foot and laundry soap were all in Taiwanese, but the Benz ads are in Mandarin.

Politicians have to be able to speak it, or at least try- it's like the old Canadian joke about having 3 official languages- English, French, and election-year French.

Ooh, do I get to do my annual Canadian Thanksgiving joke now?

"Why do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October instead of November?"

"So we can thank God for giving us such a wonderful country to live in, and still get to Florida before it starts to snow."

Get the patent lawyers, you might be on to something here:

"Great Taste Sensation! Bacon-Flavored Oreos!
Now With New Cheez'n'Bacon!"

You could get Tessar to write a country-theme jingle.

I mean if they can sell deep-fried Mars bars, deep-fried Twinkies, and Baconnaise....

Synopsis:

In the tranquil little pond of Tea Cup Café life is as it always have been. Fun, games and jolly banter abound. But beneath the very floor of the Café, a menacing entity wanders the deeply delved tunnels housing the water mains, power lines, gas mains etc.

Unknown to the unsuspecting Teacuppers it will soon rear its ugly head. The inhabitants of this peaceful little place of commune will soon feel the tremors of terror of the utmost severity.

The creature prowled the deep-delved culverts, devouring unfortunate Teacuppers who had inadvertily gotten lost on their way to the Team changing rooms.

It was strange indeed that these poor unfortunates never were missed, but it could explain the prolonged absense of some Teacuppers.

But, we will soon be aware, as the numbers of these lost members of our flock began to dwindle and no one hardly went down in these areas of the facility, the creature felt the first twinges of starvation. It began to ponder what lay high above its deep abode. It began to make its way up.

The time had come for the terror to appear...the people run screaming around uselessly...a few resolutes to attempt futile resistance...

IT WILL COME...

...FEEL THE FEAR GRAB HOLD OF YOU...

................THE HECTOR COMMETH...

.................................................. .AND NO ONE IS SAFE!

Ok that sounds disgusting but I have heard of bacon dipped in chocolate before. They sell bacon chocolate (and lots of other exotic flavors) at some expensive chocolate place in Chicago. I haven't tried it but I did dip my chicken strips in my blizzard at Dairy Queen the other day.

That said, I usually eat pretty healthy and all this unhealthy food lately has me feeling not so great and I guess I'll have to try harder. Part of it is school lunches- it's cheap and easy because I don't have to bring anything but not so great for you, generally. And the pizza is always doughy.

I get free fruit and milk at the school where I teach, but I have to bring my sandwiches myself. No canteen or snack machines present either.

Ooo, I love Alan Lee's illustrations. His conceptual designs for the movies were also amazing. They capture Middle Earth for me.
