Monstrous Regiment is fantastic, wonderful, and excellent. Read it in about 6 hours. I think it is one of the best (although I actually still prefer Night Watch over it).

Read Good Omens yet again. I love that book. But of course, that's also Neil Gaiman. Right.

I read a lot of Terry Pratchett this past semester at school, before going to sleep, and would often read the most funny of the lines outloud for my roommate. Ended up reading a good lot of the book outloud. Heh.

For some reason my regular bookshop doesn't follow the 'young adult discworld books' like the amazing maurice ect and others. This is rather distressing. I found the amazing maurice on my trip to Scotland but since that was probably once in a lifetime experience I won't have to count on that way to get more of them. Drat.

By the way, is the 'last hero' some out-of-the-series book? I have the feeling it somehow is because I can't find it anywhere in paperback yet while I can find later novels in it.

Hallo, Earniel. Yes, it's still EG. My account wasn't working for some reason, so I made a new one and decided I liked the name better, and seeing as it was already my email and my livejournal name, I decided to keep it. It's shiny and new, and I like shiny and new things. Yes.

Anyway, I think Last Hero is a Discworld thingummy, my friend has it.

AAAAAA! I didn't know there was a Terry Pratchet thread! I am too wrapped up in my own little threads.

I have been telling people for AGES to read "Good Omens" and they are finally taking my advice. WONDERFUL!

I am reading every single Terry Pratchet book over again and using them for my book logs for school.

Have you read Carpe Jugulum? The vampire family had something to do with magpies if I recall correctly.

Yes, but the villians were the Count and Countess Magpyre because it's more modern to add a "y".

The Last Hero sorta fits into the series (has many of the familiar characters in it, anyway).....it's a fully illustrated book, try find it in the "outsize" books section of yer local bookstore

And yes, it is hilarious........it's Pratchett afterall

I LOVE the "last Hero" Beautiful it is.

I am having trouble with capitals today.

And you know that stakes and garlic and holy symbols don't work on the Magpyres. They are modern.

Gaw, you don't go around turning people into sheep. You let them be people and never let them know that you're ruling them. Now the Old Count Magpyr, he was of a propper sort. He knew the rules and didn't try to rule. He provided ambiance.

Now Vetinari, ah Vetinari, is a complete and utter genious! I love him in Night Watch especially. That is how a politician/patrician should be.

Vetrinari is a very special character with extra-ordinary depth, look only at the many times he pops up in the Disc-world books! Now this is a character that can still amaze you, still have you wondering whether he's good or bad, makes you curious just how much he always knows and still keeps you interested.

Question for the Pratchett fans in the room:

I've been meaning to get into his works for years, and he has been recommended to me on several occasions as the kind of writer I would much enjoy reading. So my question is, where do I start? Of his many works, is there a first or best work that would serve as an accurate barometer of whether or not I should bother reading more? Suggestions, please.

That's one of the hardest questions to answer when it comes to Pratchett...You could try to start with Pyramids (the second Pratchett-book I read myself) or Small Gods, both which are sort of stand-alone works not connected with the rest.

Of the series, my favorite would perhaps be the Watch-series and the first book in that is (if I remember correctly) Guards! Guards!, another one which would I think be a nice start. The other series are the Witches-series (the first book in that one is Wyrd Sisters, Equal Rites being half a Witch-book but not, I think, a good starting point), Rincewind-series (the first being the first Disc-book, The Color of Magic and neither a good start, me thinks) and the Death-series, of which I can't remember the first book (Reaper Man?) but they are all good.

I've not read the entire series, but bits and pieces - you don't have to read the whole series in order to enjoy them as most of them can be deemed stand alone works. Having said that, anything with the Night Watch is hysterical.
