Gotta agree with jsandecker about that prior question: none of my editions of "The Hobbit" spell out who that king was. Your own answer indicates that one would need the annotated edition. After reading the LOTR books, I always assumed it referred to the no-longer existent Kings of Arnor / Arthedain... even Rhudaur - since that's the territory where this happened (as opposed to the note you cite from the annotated edition).

We'll let you get away with THAT one!
