Gandalf

The animated movie of the Hobbit was bad but in retrospect that is a good thing because after the success of LoTR movies for director PJ he might to a hobbit with the same actors whose roles are in both books.

I liked the animated movie and my daughter liked it too. It was menat for children and a fair interpretation of the story.

I was reading the Hobbit when it first appeared on television. I liked the songs and the dwarves. I thought the gravelly voice of Richard Boone as Smaug was perfect.

Unfortunately, as I continued to read the book, I pictured Gollum as an amphibian, and the elves as little grinch-like creatures, and it wasn't until I began reading the Fellowship of the Ring did those mental pictures change. Too bad the illustrators didn't research Tolkien better.

And the battle of the five armies was really sorry animation.

The movie was produced by Rankin & Bass in 1977. Most video stores do have it.

It's actually out on DVD. I rented it from netflix a while back. It's not so bad and actually includes tolkien songs. Beorn was left out, and the goblins are funny looking. The theme song and the saucer-eyed hobbits are... well, not too good. Very true to the over-all story, with a very seventies emphasis.

Well, it wasn't exactly stiarway to heaven, now was it?

I must admit i liked the approach, but then it coincides with the themes of my youth as well.

A few interesting tid-bits about the animated Hobbit

The theme "The Greatest Adventure" was sung by Glen Yarborough," (The composer origianlly wanted Glenn Campbell)
and the tune was more in tradition with the folksy style of Peter Paul and Mary of the 60's than anything done in the 70's. The New York Times panned the music, calling it "cloying" (it was).

In the late 70's TV violence was under scrutiny by Washington, so the action in the fights and battles were softened for that reason.

The Tolkien estate placed an injunction on the film on the day of the broadcast, so that it was only shown in the US and Canada.

At a whopping 3 million dollars, it was the most expensive TV production to date.

It was nominated for an Emmy award, but lost out to Carol Burnett.

Did your source state the reason for the injunction?

Lol, no! But it had that mellow and yes folksy 70s feel. But "15 birds in 5 fir trees" was pretty rockin', admit it!

BTW, I picked out the music to which they set the dwarves history on my recorder several years ago.

Then you are braver than me.

I liked the bit with the multi-colored beards. I often wonder if Tolkien only included one dwarf in LotR to avoid that particular bit of continuity.

Yes. Now be sure to bring a cross with you whenever you go near it. You never know when it might suddenly jump out and bite you. I swear everytime I walk past a copy it looks rather menacingly at me.....

Oh, gosh, I haven't seen it in sooooo long, I was really young the last time I saw it. All I remember is the Gollum screaming, "MY PRECIOUSSSS!!" When I was little, Gollum scared me more than the dragon did. I used to think that Gollum lived underneath my bed when I was 4 or 5.

I'm not surprised. Those acid-trip eyes that Gollum had were enough to freak me out for several nights. And I was 16 when I saw it!

I nearly ended up with an intense dislike of LotR and The Hobbit because of that movie. As it was it took me several years to persuade myself that just because the movie freaked me out didn't mean that the books would too...

The Wizard of Oz freaked me out. There was another movie, "Ivaders From Mars" that absolutely gave me nightmares, I saw both at a very young age, but when I saw "Invaders" recently, (in B&W) it was posotively laughable.

I saw the Hobbit movie in the middle of reading the Hobbit and prior to reading LotR. I quickly finished the book before seeing the movie. You really don't want to do itthe other way around.

On the whole I thought the movie was pretty good, but lacking in some areas. At the time, it was considered quite an achievement. Popular music and animation were in very different places from where they are now. I'd like to see a modern animated Hobbit. Sulley and Mike Wazowski meet Bilbo and Smaug,
Now that would be very, very cool.
