the only country dancing i can think of is line dancing, and i can't say as i personally find that too terribly attractive...

First of all, notice the word ENGLISH. This is the stuff they dance in Jane Austen movies

It doesn't mean that Mr Bean, Sherlock Holmes, and Benjamin Disraeli took up Square Dancing.

Yes, and no. In the Regency period, the waltz was introduced, and was a scandal, because it was partnered and in close contact. Although that style of dance became the norm, technically, what we now refer to as "country dances" were danced in ballrooms until late in that period.

You should look for English Country Dancing or Contra (similar) groups in your area, and drag your boyfriend. It'll make him miserable, and you'll have tons of fun.

On that note, at one such event I danced with a classmate of my sister's from college, and her boyfriend had to watch because he was too wimpy to dance.
