Personally, I think they've had their eye on North Dakota for a loooonnnng time! For sort of a new 'southern province' and 'warm-weather get-away' from those Canadian winters!

I hadn't known about those others though...

I changed it, because half this thread is about central America. (Cuba, and we talked about Mexico a bit.) We started to also get into South America a bit and it will probably also be relevant to future discussions.

Val, we haven't had any US inavsion plans... since we became a nation anyway.
(I mean, there was the war of 1812, but that went both ways, and it doesn't count anyway.)

Neither Mexico NOR Cuba are in Central America - they're both in NORTH America. Central America is the region between Mexico and Colombia - the isthmus section - from Guatamala to Panama.

Heh. Oh well, it's not like we can't still talk about North America.

Courtesy of a google search I now know to which region each country belongs, though this was harder than I thought. There's a reason I thought the Caribbean was part of Central America - no one else can decide where it is either. Central America isn't an actual continent-like land mass, and the only thing that separates North and South America is the Panama Canal. Hence the confusion. Finally I settled on this site. (Cuba is so in Central America. )

North America:
Bermuda
Canada
Mexico
St. Pierre & Miquelon (France)
The United States of America

Central America:
Aruba
Antigua and Barbuda
Anguilla
Barbados
Bahamas
Belize
Navassa Island
Cayman Islands
Costa Rica
Cuba
Dominica
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Grenada
Guadeloupe
Guatemala
Haiti
Honduras

Nicaragua
Panama
Puerto Rico
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
Trinidad and Tobago
Turks and Caicos Islands
Saint Vincent/Grenadines
British Virgin Islands

South America
Argentina

Brazil
Chile
Colombia
Ecuador
French Guiana
Falkland Islands (United Kingdom)

Of course and that site is incorrect - I've already posted many sites on the US - European Geography thread. ALL Carribean Islands are part of NORTH America.

YUou owuld pick probably the ONLY one that actually states what you believe.

As you pointed out - Central America is not a continent- it's like the term Middle east - it refers to a common region.

I don't like the title change - the discussion was supposed to be about North American relations - particularly between the US and Canada.

Websters Dictionary....

Quote:
Central America

A region of southern North America extending from the southern border of Mexico to the northern border of Colombia. It separates the Caribbean Sea from the Pacific Ocean and is linked to South America by the Isthmus of Panama.

central america

n 1: the isthmus joining North America and South America; extends from the southern border of Mexico to the northern border of Colombia [syn: Central America] 2: the nations of Central America collectively [syn: Central America]
I'll go with Websters Dictinary - thank you very much - since they are actually correct.

No, it was a comprehensive site.
Further research has turned up that Iceland is also part of North America.
EDIT: I'm going to go browse that thread now.

Deal.

That is how the thread started... do you have something to add to that discussion, because we can revive it.

Random factoid - according to the CIA factbook, Canada is Cuba's second largest export partner, after the Netherlands. (Russia is third.)
And... check out this cool (and official site, I think) of Trinidad and Tobago.
I'm finding this while trying to get an official answer on the Carribeans. I have a sinking feeling you're right though JD, grr losing arguments like this sucks.

EDIT2:

yeah - and so are the many flag sites that show NJ with the wrong flafg or with listing us as having a state song. Just because it looks comprensive - doesn't mean that it's correct.

I know I'm right.

I also don't have to partake in the discussion either with the change in the thread. Which I said above - I am planning on boycotting.

Yes, it does appear that site made a mistake, at least about Iceland.

Wait a minute, you're boycotting the thread, just because I changed the name!? Oh c'mon... um... hello? Hellooo... I'll PM you.

I'm getting my NY license next week and will be venturing into Canada all the time starting next week. My farm is only 3 miles or so from the border. Quebec's capitol Montréal is only an hour away. So I should have LOTS to say soon on the subject.

Does this have some sort of symbolic message about Canada-USA relationships?

Maybe Earthbound can tell us about how her farm is really a top-secret US govt facility for the PREVENTION of the invasion of the USA by Canada. I know that we have been openly infiltrated by Canadians like William Shatner and Celine Dion and Shania Twain, but I mean the truly serious invasion with the Mounties and all!

YOu'd be surprised by the many things that go on in North America that Europeans don't know about.
