i saw this movie a long long time ago. it was the first i had heard of tolkien...very long ago. i hated it. i absolutely hated it. its not that i thought it was bad. i dont remember whether it was bad or not. i just thought it was the scariest thing since the brave little toaster. the spiders were just too much. i probably had nightmares for a week. that was back in the day though. i was afraid of the animated robin hood too.

What i would like to know is why there is someone who is unregistered, posting and replying to himself on the same thread. but to set the record straight, here it is.

The movie that only goes halfway through way by Ralph Bashki, and that was terrible.

There was a movie of the hobbit, and one of RoTK, and those were by Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass, and they were pretty good.

You thought the Hobbit movie was good? Admittedly I am biased against the cartoon failure because I acted as Gandalf in a production of Hobbit, but still, I don't see how that travesty of nature could be called "good".

I too do not see how it good be considered good. But I'm biased against it because I played Elrond in the production of the Hobbit WiseWizard mentioned. I was better at it, just as the rest of the cast was better at the people they had been cast as.

That reminds me....what was up with those stars circling Elrond's head in the cartoon?

Eru only knows.
Personally, I thought that all the animated Tolkien was a travesty of nature (I think that's the right phrase...). In other words, it was the most terribly horribly awfully disgutingly icky piece of adaption work I've very seen in my life. Er...so yes, I disliked it.

Being my slightly masochistic self, after hearing so many bad reviews of Ralph Bashki's version of LOTR, I went out and rented it from the library. I though "Oh come on, it can't be that bad."

It literally almost made me cry, it was so bad. I liked the way Gollum was drawn (that's basically how I had imagined him), and sometimes Frodo seemed decent, but the entire film was just...awful. Aragorn in a miniskirt? Throwing the ring in the fire for no apparent reason? And Sam...my poor, poor Sam. ::goes and sobs in a corner::

Makes me appreciate the Jackson film(s) even more.

I own the hobbit and the return of the king animated features by warner brothers and this really stupid Lord of the rings movie where they stop after The battle of helms deep. The Hobbit was decent enough, but the other two were horribe. First of all the return of the king had no prelude and if you hadnt read the books how were you supposed to know what was even going on.
And as for this wacko man who makes this crackpot lord of the rings movie and stops in the middle cause his grandma cant sell the farm, well, he needs to be dragged out into the street and shot.

(shudders) Nightmares indeed. I'm now plauged with those evil misinterpretations of the ford scene where I'm watching the movie and I'm expecting my beloved Glorfindel to come riding in on Asfaloth like he's supposed to and then this figure comes in on his horse and it's always either Legolas or Arwen and it's just so... so horrible! (breaks down in tears at the thought of the replacements)

Yes. And be glad you've been spared so long from even knowing about it.

I've not seen the hobbit movie but I've seen the animated LOTR- it was the voices that got me! Hazel from Watership down/Caligula from I Claudius as Aragorn- v.bad and then as if that couldn't be worse, Anthony Daniels aka cool as sqeaky, annoying C-3PO in Star Wars but Legolas in LOTR?!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I cried and cried, it was the most terrible thing I've ever seen. The only bit I liked was with Gollum and the "schneaking" part! Mx

Personally, I found the two Rankin Bass movies (The Hobbit and The Return of the King) a little too geared towards kids for my liking. The art was kind of neat in some parts. So as Anduin said, as kids movies they're not bad and maybe a decent way to introduce youngsters to Tolkien. The only bit problem is that they'll spend the rest of their lives seeing Gollum as a mutated frog.

Also, for as much maligned as it's been, I thought the Bakshi version of the Lord of the Rings was actually quite good. Of course it has the notable deficiency of being cut off in the middle, and as ever glances over many great details. But overall, I thought it was a fine interpretation. I particularly liked their portrayal of Strider and the Mines of Moria incl. the Balrog. And I've always adored the score, which is vastly underrated.

The problem with movies is that they're so rare that, generally, when one is done it's assumed that that's it. I'd love to see scores of different films done showing different directors' interpretations of the novels. Some would emphasize one aspect and some others. And then we could all choose which film is our favorite rather than having to say "The Hobbit movie sucked"

Yazad
I watched them when I was little because my rents taped them.
Now I am 13 and am mad because the stupid direct tv company wouldn't let us tape all of it all we got to tape was the 1st 5 minutes of each(recentally). They still rock though. I like the dwarves songs in the very beginning of The Hobbit.
The one about the misty mountains and the one about the plates.
