(London) A day after Matthew Roche entered into a civil partnership with his longtime lover Christopher Cramp the 46 year old has died.

Roche who had inoperable lung cancer was given a special dispensation by the government to bypass the normal 15 day waiting period between the time a couple applies for a civil partnership and date the ceremony can be held.

The couple was united in a brief ceremony Monday, the same day that the civil partnership law came into effect. The government decision made Roche and Cramp the first same-sex couple to exchange vows in Britain.

The ceremony was held at St Barnabas Hospice in West Sussex. About 20 family and friends attended.

"I really, really needed to get married and we are very lucky indeed to be given the opportunity," Roche told the BBC shortly after the ceremony. [...]

The rest of my post is about gay marriage, and can be found here.

What are we, chopped liver? We passed the civil union bill ages ago.

Of interest perhaps....

“Gay Muslims”
Last week Sir Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that homosexuality is immoral, harmful and not acceptable in Islam. The police are reported to be investigating Sir Iqbal’s remarks to see if they breach the Public Order Act.

Shazia Khan examines the tensions that exist within the Muslim community on the gay issue.

Listen to it all from the BBC.

I couldn't get the link to the bbc to come over, but if you go to the site and link, it works just fine.

So more evidence that fundamentalists of many religions find it ok to discriminate against gays?

we put the fun in fundamentalism

and in other news, as personal proof that gay people can actually be monogamous, i am now in a relationship (at last ) and it is most certainly entirely monogamous

Perhaps we should change the thread title to be more inclusive...

and, of course, comment:

Enjoy!

PS: Nurv, this is Canadian!

personally, i think that civil partnerships are a step in the right direction, albeit a small step, but i don't think i would consider taking that step for myself, at least not for at least a few years
