Anyone here depend on their laptop/i-book/whatever?

I'm still trying to pick out my phone.

I have a laptop, but what does that have to do with a phone?

I expect the Teacup Café ones to be even better!

I'm using an old (at least 3 years old) Fuijitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop right now (at home).
You could say I depend on it ...

I'm not sure, Mari. Potentially she's planning to hook her phone up to her laptop for a connection... Maybe? I don't know.

What ARE you meaning, Siscuz?

Well... you can use internet to call. It's a lot cheaper then a real phone. That's how I called my parents when I lived in Japan.

I was thinking more along the lines of using the cellphone to get an internet connection for the computer, not the other way around. I know people used to do that (some of my dad's co-workers did it I believe).

I don't have experience with that, so I couldn't help her if that is her project.

We're working on it, though ...

I wouldn't get a phone that was designed to be a mini laptop, for example, if I was planning to use a laptop. Similarly, getting a phone that's essentially a low-end camera makes no sense if you already have a low-end camera.

I'm looking at phones that do all kinds of things, and I'm looking at various plans. But I don't want to be locked into a phone for surfing and not want to surf with it, kwim?

Why would anyone want a mini-laptop phone? They are too small to watch films on or listen music on, you can't type quickly and basically they are just too tiny to be useful for that purpose. *loves her preciousss*

I remember that Sony Ericson or Nokia - don't remember which - had a special phone a couple of years ago. It was specially made to be good for making phone calls and sending text messages, nothing more fancy.

It was a phone that specialized in being a phone.
Most unusual.

Yeah, that would be just the thing.

I have to figure out phones and plans for multiple phones, and my head will explode.

I am, in fact, having a really crappy day, because I have chosen my local support system very poorly. *tears*

Right now I have no mobile internet access. That means, if I'm driving, I'd darn well better know where I'm going. If I'm out of town (which happens fairly often) I have no way to check email or anything else. SOME way of accessing the internet would probably be helpful, but I have to put together a comprehensive plan, because I hate cobbled-together systems.

*offers Sis a handkerchief and a shoulder*
If you want to talk about it or just do some general venting, you know where to find me.
Oh! I know! I'll lend you my huge fluffy tiger for the day! His name is Propje and he loves hugging and cuddling (I conditioned him well )

Hmm, I guess internet access might be useful in such cases maybe. Here having or using internet on your mobile isn't at all normal. Only 7% of the people who have a phone with internet actually use it. It was in the news the other day because companies are now either removing the function or trying to make it more attractive.

Here they're just insisting you have it.

All the new phones, apparently, are internet ready, you have to pay for it, and block it on any phone you don't want to use it.

Like that'll make me more likely to download Mariah Carey wallpaper. @@@@

In Norway most phones are ready for it, too, and I've got a Nokia E61 where I can read my email. I only pay when I use it - I pay for the amount of MB downloaded. No wallpaper for me, either!

It blocks graphics, so I don't have to pay for graphics that would be too big for the screen anyway - but it downloads flash animations, without being able to show them, so I try to avoid sites with them.

I can post on Entmoot with it - I believe I've posted in the Teacup Café from it - but I wouldn't use it for posting in the Quote game - the screen is too small ...

I liked the old system. Bell company owned the phones and they didn't pretend otherwise. But you could drive a truck over thenm and they'd still work.
