Eol was a big part of it.

I blame Turgon too.

Hence you're thoughtful poem.

I blame Morgoth too.

But Turgon didn't handle that situation well at all. His cousin Finrod would have done a much better job.

Ingwe would have done the best job, hence his staying in valimar

and here's what ingwe would receive as a valentines gift:
a scion of telperion, with a collar of gold around the girth of the tree,
the collar inscribed "For the Wisest of the Eldar"

Very nice.

But how good a job would he have done with Noldorin subjects? Or would he have just let them go off by themselves?

mere speculation, but i believe under his supreme reign within the halls of valinor, all elves would be united as one culture, a wonderful hegemony

That would be nice. Alas, not everyone is as agreeable as the Vanyar. Hm. Maybe it was a good thing that the pesky Noldor left Valinor... Without them... your dream could definitely have come to pass. Finarfin's practically a Vanya as it is...

Eol was a jerk, but lets not forget Maeglin while we are busy pointing fingers

now come on! maeglin had god intentions until he saw idril, if it weren't for eol ensnaring aredhel, maeglin wouldn't even be born, if it weren't for feanor's stoopid oath, aredhel, turgon et al wouldn't even be in beleriand

I can link anything back to ol' hothead Feanor

Let's do it. Let's link everything back to him.

I have to imagine Maeglin was pretty much psychologically scarred by what happened in Gondolin. His father tries to kill him, but ends up killing his mother instead. Then the uncle he's heard about from his mother decides to throw his dad off a cliff. Only Idril was against the whole thing. Anyone wonder why he fell in love with her?

As terrible as Maeglin was... I have to say that he had far more of an "excuse" than someone like Fëanor.

And dear Eru, I'm developing sympathies for Maeglin. Someone hit me, please.

What? Just because I can sympathise with him doesn't mean I like him. He's still an **shole in my book and shall always be so.

Heck, I can sympathise with Morgoth if I put my mind to it (but never with Curufin! )

What about that linking everything evil in the world back to Fëanor? Want to start a new thread on it?
