well, he should be someone more intelligent, cuz his voice is too powerful and smart for a troll...

Yeah. I originally cast him in stead of Peter O'Toole tyo be Dwalin, but I couldn't see him as a dwarf. Well, I can a little bit.
By the way, I was saying Chris. Lee was in my list. But Ainulundale's list was very good, even though I knew hardly any actors. It's probably better, as mentioned above, it would cost like billions to put my cast on the screen.
Let's just stick with Ainulundale's list and go from there.

Your right about the sets being scaled, but couldn't they make it like LotR? I mean, John Rhys Davies is taller than Legolas's portrayer (Orlando Bloom); and in the movie he's about three feet shorter.
Elijah Wood, (Frodo), Sean Astin (Sam), Dom *whatever his name is (Merry) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) are all full grown twenties. But in the movie they are three feet high. They digitally remastered them and in some shots made them walk on there knees and added the computerized feet.
Yes, but this was done very carefully. Gimli had to be in the right proportion to the hobbits so they could scale all the short characters down at once. You can't just cast all sorts of actors of random heights and expect it to work. What is Warwick Davis doing on the list anyway? I think Thranduil was probably regular elf height... And the spiders don't talk, so they don't need to be on the list.

Anyone seen Dragonheart? Sean Connery does the voice of a dragon in it, and he'd be a great Smaug. Christopher Lee would also be great, with his deep intelligent voice. It should be a crafty sounding older man, anyway. As for the dwarves, I can see Bernard Hill as Thorin, but the others should be relatively unknown actors so they can actually look dwarvish. I can see John Rhys Davies as Beorn. And the trolls should be very dumb sounding, so don't cast great actors with intelligent voices to play them!

That would be interesting if Gimli was Gloin...
In FOTR, they actually did have someone portraying Gloin. He was the white-bearded dwarf seen with Gimli before and during the Council.
And Ian Holm would be easy to do. You do see him in the prologue as young Bilbo, because of makeup. And then look at him in Rivendell...and at the end of ROTK!
James Earl Jones would be a good choice for Smaug, I think...

Suprisingly, the spiders in The Hobbit do talk. Quite a lot actually and very creepily so.

Ori: John Rhys Davies? No. I agree with Gandalf, Bilbo, and Gollum. But John should be Gloin.

Yes, but he was old in FoTR, John might look younger playing the part... Gloin was never up closes or anything anyways.

i think if the Hobbit was ever made into a movie and if it was directed by peter Jackson he would try to keep any characters from both the Hobbit and LOTR the same for continuity reasons

and the likely hood of John Rhys Davies playing a dwarf again is next to nothing, he was alergic to the prostetics

TPTB were consulted and advise that although similar, the topics are separate entites and ok to be so.

Actually Spock, the other thread Chrys is referring to was a thread named 'Fantasy cast list' started by JTB, which had an identical topic. I merged both threads yesterday but apparently forgot say they were merged.

So hereby: 'Casting Call!' and 'Fantasy Cast List' are now merged.

I would have to say the best voice for Smaug would have to be Sean Connery cause he played an excelent Draco in DragonHeart.
