In quick succession,

Terry Pratchett - The Wee Free Men
" - A Hat Full Of Sky
" - Wintersmith

are what I've been reading the last 2-3 days. Good ones all around

A Game of Thrones, by GRR Martin...very interesting so far, I'm about halfway through. A little bit of a shock after the mildness of Jordan and Tolkien, I must admit, but a good piece of writing.

I'm currently reading a selection of poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Awesome stuff! The man was a true genius.

I'm reading the series too. I'm currently in the middle of book 4.

G.R.R.Martin has a way of shattering stereotypes. Read through to the end. There's more and more coming your way.

What's it like? Not that I want any spoilers, you understand.

What is it about spoilers? That's something I never could understand. Okay, some people don't like to know what they will read/see/hear/who's the murderer etc. But why? The fact that you know (some of) the storyline, does it lessen the enjoyment or what? For me it never "spoiled" anything... but that's just me of course. *shrug*

I'd be glad to explain . I like suspense, and there is no suspense if I know how the book will turn out.

Pretty good, it matches the first book. I liked the character changes some of the people went through. There was a gasp moment. At least one gasp moment. Not to mention one of the coolest battle scenes ever.

I thought you'd read A Feast for Crows...or was that just Falathion?

Probably Falathion. I haven't read any books by G.R.R. Martin.

Oh, wow! Yeah, it was a good book. I like the way the plot's set out, although sometimes it gets complicated. It's also interesting how he uses the elements to portray the Houses of Stark (Ice) and Targaryen (Fire).

GRR Martin has a lot of politics in that series. Although it's easier to understand than WoT.

I'm interested . I'll put them on my fiction reading list. That reading list up to now has only had one book on it, and that book has been on it for months now . I'm interested in checking GRR Martin's writing out now, though .

WoT goes into too much detail on irrelevant plot threads and political situations that have very little to do with the main storyline, IMO.

I see. I thought that'd be it... even though I'm different. I like suspense too, but even if I know the story, the what, there is still suspense about the how, you know? And unless someone reads the story to me word by word ( ) - well, there is always something to discover.

Hmm. That's got to be nice . And I enjoy my way of feeling suspense about the what, as well. I'm glad people can enjoy books in different ways.

I'd suggest Martin as well. He writes long books like Jordan, but is much better at self-editing. Probably because he spent a lot of time as an editor throughout his life.

From purely the standpoint of prose, I'd say he's arguably the best fantasy writer I've read. His only shortcoming, in my point of view, is that he could add a bit more "big picture" fantasy into his series, but that might be addressed later, since there is still more to come.

No worries about that in Martin. Pretty much all of the threads key into the main plot, which...well, I can't really tell you, because it's a spoiler, spurred on by something that happens at least midway through the book.
