Undoubtedly, the five most important characters in Lord of the Rings are:

1. Nob the Hobbit.

2. Galdor of the Havens.

3. Bill Ferny.

4. Celebrimbor.

5. The Mouth of Sauron.

Also of prime import: Mayor Will Whitfoot. Oh, and the elf kid who washes the docks at the Grey Havens.

"...[The Lord of the Rings] is to exemplify most clearly a recurrent theme: the place in 'world politics' of the unforeseen and unforeseeable acts of will, and deeds of virtue of the apparently small, ungreat, fogotten in the places of the Wise and Great (good as well as evil). A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Of course Sam is first! And i do think that Sauron is important Radagast, but i only had to list 5 and Gollum DID destroy the ring.

Hi, I'm new to this site, but it looks great! Five most important characters?

Bilbo - he found the damned thing.
Smeagol - assisted in the destruction of the ring.
Frodo/Sam - I'm going to class them as one.
Gandalf/Saruman - ditto. Opposing forces.
Sauron.

9,999 posts later, I'd thought I'd ressurect my first post on this board to re-evaluate my choices made 6 years ago.

So, without cheating (this time), my choices are (in no particular order):
  • Sam
  • Frodo
  • Aragorn
  • Gandalf
  • Sauron

I want to stick poor old gollum in there, but I don't think he supersedes any that I've listed.

Good idea for a 10k, Shee.

P. S. I see your first post very effectively killed the thread. A truly auspicious beginning, wasn't it?

P. P. S. Wow, 6 years and 10 days ago.

Yes, kinda worked out well, timing-wise, huh?

Shut yer mouf, gwai.

Ri? There wasn't a helluva lot of reasoning there, just that all those characters[listed] felt .... not quite finding the words here... well, irreplaceable. It just seems that when it really comes down to it, those are the 5 that played the most important role during that particular time-period. There are definitely "close" fits though (ie Bilbo, Gollum, etc).

Ah, there you are.

I noticed you cheated AND killed the thread.

Why are they the important ones? And do you think they're important internally to those books, or are you influenced in your choices by knowing about further works in the canon?

They're important cos I say so.

Seriously? I guess there were a lot a players that had to come together at that particular time and choosing only 5 is like trying to choose yer favourite Beatles song (you like how I referenced my 'fake' 10,000th, there sis? ).

1. Samwise - the quest would have failed much sooner without him
2. Gollum - the quest would have failed altogether without him
3. Gandalf - the quest would never have begun without him
4. Frodo - his quest succeeded even though he failed at the end - he did better than anyone else would have
5. The Balrog - fought Gandalf to the death of them both, resulting in Gandalf being sent back with major upgrades

So here goes :

The Witch-King (who had to do all the dirty work and some of the planning)
Sauron (one should honor the Big Boss)_
Gandalf, the eee-vil manipulator
Aragorn, his puppet, who was lucky to get himself a crown
Gollum who has done the job in the end
Some hobbits (who cares?) - but that is 6 already, so no hobbits.
