FINE- this is a IMO thread unless you quote someone else. I am making my choices based upon current availability to the general public and not necessarily historical comparissons.

Again ammunition will compensate for cartridge size. Many law enforcement and military studies have validated the 9mm with the proper ammo.

Then you have a similar background to myself as the T.MG is illegal and not available for over forty years to the general public. It's unfair to even mention it in a discussion with the general posters as they may not even know what it looks like.

Again, we agree but I prefer not to splatter the insides of my house with the insides of an intruder. A shotgun with large shot is good to have but a handgun is usually easier to handle, to hide and to use for most people with a little practice. What's the use of having a shotgun if you're going to blow up your piano and only scare the burglar

Absolutely, almost. I advise finding a weapon you are comfortable using; i.e. holding and shooting; and then practice a bit every so often so that you can hit your target. Most shootings are within 15' and closer so you don't need to be an "annie oakley" to use a gun for self defense.

LOL!!
Well, that Beretta I had was extremely accurate, but a lot of my friends actually prefer Glocks (ugh, I hate Glocks). What is the fascination with Glock guns, anyway?

to back track a bit; a .25 cal. isn't going to kill anyone unless you put it against their temple (typical execution), in most cases.
secondly, remember James Bond had his Baretta taken away for lack of stopping power.
lastly, glocks originally became famous as 'invisible' to airport and metal detection devices. Currently they are just darn well made guns.

Ah, but who needs to blast away in one's own house? Its the sound of the chambering that will scare them away without firing a shot. And if they are intent on harming anyone, they will be missing a good portion of their gut for trying.

And yes opportunities to fire a Thompson are indeed limited, but still, I don't see where their mention in this thread is verboten. Not everybody has a black powder Sharps .50 muzzle loader either, so I guess I can't talk about that one either? Since it seems to me that you are framing some rules of mention in this thread, fine. Have at it.

Cheers,
Snowdog

No, you guys feel free to argue away in this thread! It's very intersting to read, for real. It's the WINE thread I made that I wanted to keep non-argumentative. Guns, on the other hand, always beg for some sort of strife!

Sorry, I thought that's what was being discussed. My error.

they are more than limited for a weapon outlawed over 40 yrs ago.

Geeze Louise, I again thought this was a 'practical' discussion and not a theoretical or historical one. You can have it.

I beg to differ, at a good 10 yards, I can put a hole in some ones head large enough to kill them, provided their skull isnt cement. And by law, if you are firing in self defence, its really only one shot that counts. If you open up on a fellow, and he had stopped advancing and was still standing, technically, you'd be billed for assult and or murder...But y'all know that.

As for glocks, they are damn well built guns, that and the invisibility in metla detectors as they are mostly made out of high grade plastics adn what have you...I have one, but my brother is an expert.

at 30' I have yet to see anyone able to fire a 25 cal semi-auto hand gun and even hit the target....ballistically it won't penetrate a skull.

Heh...Lucky shot I guess, then. And its not as though I would need to shoot some one 30ft away. Its for close quarters that its made for. If some one jumps me, its point blank that I have shot it, and that does plenty on its own.

So glad I don't own a weapon anymore because I would be SHOOTING MY NINE RIGHT THIS MOMENT into the skull of the owner of this condominium, that jackass.
