Elves v. Humans... thats nonsense it's obvious that Hobbits would win anywas! Teo great kings of men and elves; Elendil and Gil-Galad, were slain trying to defeat Sauron, and yet one Hobbit defeated him quite nicely. In a war between men and elves, dwarves and hobbits would come out on top I think. As for the coolest race, I would have to say my personal favorite are the dwarves. No rivals in the crafts of hard metals and earth. Not to mention those hardcore berserker war dwarves!

What about the Dwarves? According to Tolkien in one of the HoME books (Morgoth's Ring, I think):

"The most redoubtable warriors of all speaking peoples".

I like the Elves - most likely because they have a sence of myth to them. (I guess that is mostly because I'm not an Elf myself ) And it is cool that they have so much wisdom. The average humans (not from Numenor) are kind of ignorant. Oh, and Dwarves don't really do it for me.

Hardcore Berserker War Dwarves? Which universe is that from?

Okay, so dwarves were great warriors. It still amuses me to see how much of the way people think of Middle Earth is influenced by pop fantasy.

And Elves are still Mary Sues.

how dare yousay that. They are not. Elves are noble, honourable and civilized. You should know I'm talking about the Elves in Silm, in LotR they were maybe a bit to secluded.

Gee, Lenya. I'm sorry that my bashing your sue-race has offended you.

It's not the elves I don't like. Tolkien's elves are the original, and still the best, modern fantasy representation of the motif. It's all those bloody elf-fangirls with the OMG Elves are so sexxeh + perfect.

Seriously. Get off of it, people.

Tolkien's elves were derived from humanity. Just like Hobbits and Orcs. Subtract a little here, add a little there, and viola. Some of the flaws that are common in humans are less common in Elves, some of the flaws that were rare in humans were quite common in Elves. I think it's a travesty the way people try to take Professor T's solidly grounded depiction of a demi-human race with its own quirks and foibles and turn it into some racial icon which they can lust over and project their ego through.

As a final evidence in support of my proposition 'Elves are Mary Sues', I offer the following:

+ Do you take any negative feedback about the character as a personal affront? [4 points]

Lenya! On your behalf and on behalf of everyone who shares your sentiment, I award 4 Sue Points to the elven race.

+ Skill in martial arts or hand-to-hand combat [2 points]
+ Does the character die a romantic death (e.g. suicide, execution, battle wounds, broken heart, etc.)? [5 points]

Attalus! On behalf of you, and JRR tolkien, I bestow upon the character of Fingolfin 6 Sue Points

The prosecution rests.

In case anyone was wondering, the 'Sue points' were awarded based on The Original Fiction
Mary-Sue Litmus Test
(which was the first entry Google gave me for "Mary Sue" and 'test' ). While technically it's meant for single characters, it applies pretty well to the race as a whole.

The Elven race Tolkien wrote them would be 'borderline Mary Sue'. The Elven race as many fangirls (and boys) seem to percieve them would be 'Irredeemable Mary Sue'.

And for everybody who's been completely lost by this - suffice it to say that the term 'Mary Sue' refers to a phenomenon which is just one of a long list of reasons why all fanfic authors should DIE.

LOL, the chief character in my novel has only a 25, making her a Non-Sue. That's encouraging.

Well, you might notice I'm not really hard on elves so much as I am hard on elf fangirls (and fanboys) with your slavish devotion to the propositon that 'elves are omg so perfect!'.

Addendum:

+ If someone calls your character a Mary Sue, do you immediately assume they're jealous? [2]

Congratulations! You just got the elven race another 2 Sue Points! Don't you feel speshul?
