my ultimate defining quote has to be One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them
one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them, In the land of mordor where the shadows lie

Many literary works have a defining, recognizable quote. Someone says it and 'everyone' with any familiarity to the story knows EXACTLY where it comes from. Examples: Shakespeare's "To be or not to be..." from 'Hamlet' and "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo..." from 'Romeo and Juliet' - and I'm sure there are SO many others.

What would be the single, most defining quote from 'The Lord of the Rings' - such that, if someone says it, 'everyone' knows where it's from and what they're talking about? Or - the quote that comes most readily to mind when someone mentions the story?

It'd be a shame if it came down to an 'evil' quote, but maybe: "One Ring to Rule them all..." is a strong candidate.
"What's a hobbit?"
I think a rohan man said it...

"You cannot pass!"
He he...

"My peshash"
Er... misspelled and in the hobbit to...

"For reck, for ruin, and the red dawn!"
Not shore about if this is in the books or movies but got stuck in my head...

it is in the , and it's (as spoken by Eomer, Lord of the mark, after the death of theoden)
Quote:
out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
i came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing
to hope's end i rode and to heart's breaking
now for wrath, now for ruin, and a red nightfall
an excellent theoden quote is
Quote:
now is the hour come, riders of the mark, sons of eorl! foes and fire are before you, and your homes far behind. yet, though you fight upon an alien field, the glory that you reap there shall be your own for ever. oaths ye have taken: now fulfill them all, to lord and land and league of friendship!

No... he MUST have been taking that verbatim from the Swedish translation... Tolkien had SO much trouble getting translators to not take liberties with the text.

*cough-cough*

Dont tell me what I cannot do

Two men are on a Island, they both see a "monster", one sees a bright light, and the other sees a dark cloud

My name bares no reference to the music artist.
