Pippin turned the the mule and patted it on the nose, "Shoo! My hair..." he said. Seeing that it was quite intent on getting his hair, Pippin walked over to the other side of Merry. "Yes, she does doesn't she? Merry and I think she is deaf." Pippin said, answering the question for his cousin.

Estella turned though she did not back any further away from the Big Person sitting on the ground before her. She grinned at Pippin's remark, watching Merry as he studied his torn shirt, and held her hand out to the mule, which quickly descended on the chance to nibble at her sleeve; she fished her handkerchief from her pocket and allowed it to eat that before the creature completely devoured her cuff. She rubbed the back of his head fondly as the fabric disappeared into his mouth.

"Boys have no ways with animals," she said tauntingly, smiling apologetically at Paladin and silently mouthing a line of repentance.
