Well, the book is usually considered the story in any tome. Therefore my guess. The appendix, etc. are just reference and miscellaneous stuff and so shouldn't figure into the calculations.

hmmm, I don't think the appendix lists people by the number of 'greats', etc. Perhaps you might reconsider re-wording this?
