Ah, but how do you know it wasn't a sequel?
Really, remember at the end, (spoilers!) when that boy tells her (don't remember her name) about the blue-eyed boy from...somewhere far away? I don't remember it that well, but I remember that part. And considering they're both in that post-apocolyptic world. . .well, I just thought it might be. . .

I think Gathering Blue is kinda a prequel because it seems like a sort of cave man era (just joking) while the Giver seems very sophisticated technology-wise

UMMMMMM...... the "blue eyed boy" was her father. It is obvious that it is a prequel because they have only the bare minimum in technology. I know that technology isn't everything, but in this case it shows that it was a long time agon.

Question, why do you think that Jonas died? At the end of the book (yes I know I'm spoiling it for some) Lois Lowrey stays that "He sat on the sled and slowly started down the hill to (someting like) the people who he knew were waiting for him and Gabriel." Does that sound like he died? sorry, I know it is you personal opinion but just curious.

Maybe I should read it again to make sure, but I still think it's a sequel of sorts. The thing about the technology, well, it could be around the same time. It's obvious that something happened, some sort of apocolyptic happening, in both books. Depending on where one was, whatever happened could have hit much harder in some places--places like where the girl in Gathering Blue is from, there would have been more destruction and so on, whereas in The Giver, they still had their technology and stuff...er, I don't know, I can't really make my point well because it's been a long time since I read both books, but I still think it's a sort of sequel
And I think the blue-eyed boy is Jonas

Why? Interesting thought. could be. I don't remember his name but he could have changed it from Jonas. though sleds have to be relativley new. There are many things inside the Giver that show that he Couldn't be JOnas though. HMMMMM must go back and re-read them.

In some magazine, I read that The Giver is Elijah Wood's favorite book. Oops. I let it slip.......

I thought it was a really cool book. For some reason I am attracted to books with that theme. It kinda' scares me too though; it is like a vision of what could happen if we're not careful.

I don't think he died at the end though, being partial to HAPPY endings myself.....

hey. first of all, i always thought jonas found elsewhere when i read it way back when. also, has anyone ever heard of Number the Stars? Same author but the book is completely different. Ok I don't mean to offend anybody at all please don't even try to twist it into that, but the thing is, there are a lot of books about the Jews and the haulocast (sp.?) and WWII in general, and they kind of start to seem all the same. However, Number the Stars is about the naxis in Denmark, and this girl Annemarie and her jewish friend and it is a really good book. It's more realistic and historical than the giver, (or that blue book that i didnt read but will) but it is still good.

I loved both The Giver and Number the Stars!! I always thought that Jonas did reach elsewhere...but even if he didn't, did you ever wonder what his leaving did to those he left behind? Did his leaving have any profound effect on them? I haven't read the book in a few years but I always felt that it probably did...

One of my favorite books ever, although it is at the grade school level. Just thinking of the society in the book gives me ideas in creative writing.

I read that book three years ago, in sixth grade. I absolutely loved it. I think that the fact that their world is so simplistic is what appealed to me... the fact that they were so naive... I don't know.
Gosh dern, now I'm going to have to dig out my sister's copy and reread it... I have so many books I want to read right now...
