Yes, many of them are indeed fairly common, but I've also been to a fair number of boards that just had a handful of stock smilies without any of the fancy ones.

What's this now? Santa has noticed that not very many of you have been posting in threads as quickly as you used to.
At first Santa thought you were all just aging very rapidly, and thus slowing down due to severe arthritis brought on by massive RSI's because you're all a bunch of little spammers..... But then Santa realized that some naughty administrator got in the way of your hectic posting schedule by enforcing a time limit... so Santa thought he'd do something to lessen that, and get you posting quicker! Holly Fudge, Santa's got a massive hangover.
You know how it is... one minute you're eating a harmless looking cookie that one of those Keebler elves passed you and the next thing you know you're on a sugar high for the next five hours and come to your senses doing windsprints on a stair machine while the Hobbits chant, "CLIMB! CLIMB!".... meanwhile in the corner half the Administrative team is being held upside down in a handstand and having a Mountain Doom chugging contest while the Moderator team plays "Whack-a-Nazgul," with elven-forged weapons..... Suffice to say things got a little crazy and Santa isn't up for rhyming.
