The blues clubs sound good.
Indeed, Chicago is a city i would like to visit. From what I hear tell - it has an identity that intrigues me. A real city but one where past and present meet in juxtaposition - the old europeans and the new americans - with good beer and an appreciation of good music. |

*Bump*
So in a few days, on October 2nd in Copenhagen, the International Olympic Committee will decide upon which candidate city will take home the Olympic Games in 2016. Will Chicago prevail over the other candidates - Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Madrid?

Just saw the news that Chicago was eliminated in the first round.
Tokyo was eliminated after that. It's down to either Rio or Madrid.

Aww, so no Olympics on your doorstep, eh? Were there any reasons given? I was kinda expecting Chicago to come on top.

I was too. And - despite concerns that some locals had about hosting it here, I was hoping. It would have been a big thing - very memorable. And in the case of Chicago, so much effort was expended, and so many different people pulled together to give it - that it's hard to imagine us bidding again any decade soon.
No - no reasons as of yet. Maybe later the IOC members will talk about their votes. The process, as I understand it, is that they have three rounds of voting with the top four cities. In each round, the low vote-getter is eliminated. So Chicago finished fourth in the first, 4-way, vote - and then Tokyo finished third in the subsequent 3-way vote. It will now come down to a 2-way vote between the final two cities. Later they may say something about why they voted - but they don't have to.

Last? Wow thats kind of a slap in the face... It really should have come down to Rio or Chicago. Tokyo's bid was "lackluster" according to even the Japanese and Madrid has had the misfortune of of having had Barcelona in 92 and now London in 2012 that would count against the prospect of having another European based Olympics. And yet Chicago gets rejected first ballot even after Obama went over himself to argue the case? I guess we still have more global respect to earn back despite the change in administration... I figured it was a new day and people saw the US in a different light since the election. What happened to all the Obama lovin we saw in his first trip to Europe!?
Oh well, glad that it ended up being Rio at least as South America has not had in Olympics in... ever? A long time at least.

Yep, the South Americans have had a couple of football World Cups but it will be the first time ever the continent arranges the Games. It's about time!
I was hoping for Chicago but I think Rio is a great choice. I expect Rio to give us the most festive Olympics ever. The atmosphere surrounding the Games will be as carnival-like as ever before

But doesn't Rio have massive air pollution and smog problems? I don't quite see them able to pull something off like China did, just close about every polluting facility down for the Games.
I was wondering too how Madrid was supposed to cope with both the summer tourists *nd the Games-audience. And I remember them having severe water-shortages in summer. Which is why I had expected Chicago to be a more suitable candidate. I guess the Olympic Committee thought differently.
