I was just thinking that same thing, Bombadillo. I was thinking maybe the elves countered with another nice compact and catchy quote but what Gildor says is "Elves seldom give advice, for advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill." OK here's the story: I was listening to over a hundred kids all introduce themselves and give us some advice about being exchange students. I was wondering what I, if I was in their place, would have said. And I was thinking of saying just that. "Go not..."

"But I spoke hastily. We must not be hasty. I have become too hot. I must cool myself and think; for it is easier to shout stop! than to do it."

Treebeard, Book 2 Chapter 4

"A man that flies from his fear may find that he has only taken a short cut to meet it."

Sador, explaining to Turin how we returned from the war only to get his foot cut off because of a mishap with his ax when he was a woodsman. In Unfinished Tales, in the chapter of The Childhood of Turin.

Tree Dweller- Does sugar keep you awake? Than keep a bag of M&Ms by you side as you read. (It's really not that bad...) *ducks and hides* I actually haven't read all of it... I got bored. *hides again*

Yes - I saw something about that a few months ago - and I'm trying to invent other 'older' versions of common sayings. One good one that I've thought of... well, I'm saving it for use in a fanfic story I'm working on.

"Even with one eye you should see clearer. We fought this war for vengeance, and vengeance we have taken. But it is not sweet. If this is victory, then our hands are too small to hold it."

—The reply of the united Dwarven army of the Seven Houses to Thráin son of Thrór after the costly Battle of Azanulbizar. (The population of the Dwarves seems never to have recovered, although they won both the battle and the war.)
