Snape was a deatheater, but he turned to the good side before voldemorts fall, and rsiked his own life to bring information to Dumbeldore.
also, snape protects harry at the quiditchgame beacuse harry's father saved snape a time when they where young.
so Snape is not on party whit Professor Quirrell.

Edit: cross-post, pytt posted while I was still writing this. Sorry 'bout that.

See that's the thing, Snape isn't a Death Eater anymore. Wait, what made you think he was in the first place? That hasn't been revealed in the movies, IIRC.
Anyway,
he was a Death Eater, but is not one now, and we don't know what any of the circumstances are of his joining or leaving them, but it is presumed that Dumbledore was involved in his leaving them. So now he apparently hates Voldemort, and that's why he was against Quirrel. As far as him saving Harry, Harry's father prevented Snape from being killed once when they were in school, so he owed him a life debt.
Does that make sense?

It's not grey to me...

They didn't say anything about it in the Third movie? (no, I didn't watch it. I guess IU should.) You really, really should read the books before the next movies. Everything will be more clear that way. They drop a lot of info in the movies, it seems.

Yes, it's the spoiler code that prevents people from reading spoilers unless they highlight the grey box.

Yeah, you really need to read the other books before Goblet of Fire movie comes out, because I'm sure they'll have to drop quite a bit out of it for it to be in reasonable time. And, you'll find out stuff you don't want to know on the internet if you don't read the books. I learned that the hard way

Eh, I'm not as interested in HP as I am LotR really. I don't mind hearing alot of the info from the net before I read. I probably wont start reading till JK has finished all of her books.

i think that is clever of you.
it is a hell to wait for the next book to be finished, if you like theese books.
so to wait until all of them is finished is a good thing.

I agree with the first part, but you should still read them. It's worth the wait. You're really missing out on something great.

Hear hear, Pytt. It's terrible waiting for the books to come out! But still, I would advise you not to read too much info on the net because it is SO much better to find it out yourself. That's one of the greatest things about Harry Potter, the surprises, JKR is just amazing at weaving seemingly non-important things into the story.

Halbarad,

Would you prepare a case from the script of a book? 'Course not!

You sound stressed enough to need to read for a little relaxation. Harry Potter is advertised as a children's series, but this nearly-fifty year old finds them to be excellent literature.

Do yourself a favor and read the books!

(If you intend this sort of blsphemy to the Narnia series, I must earnestly dissaude you!)

He's only not reading them at the moment because he's too busy IIRC, and that's okay.

Harry Potter (and Narnia) are for everyone!

And it ended up being pointless in this case because pytt quoted it in the next post! Oh, well.
Yes, this is the kind of thread where spoiler grey is nice to use, guys.

No problem, I don't think anyone will keel over from reading that one spoiler.
It is a handy thing to have, isn't it?

Who is this Moony person? In the third film there was reference to her with the map thing, so who is she/he? What is her/his significance!?

Here is the answer to Halbarad's question, and since spoiler tags don't work any more, I made it white. So just highlight between *** and ***

***
Moony is Professor Remus Lupin, one of the four Marauders who created the map.

Snape used to be a Death Eater the last time Voldemort was in power (when harry was a baby). But he switched sides and became a spy for Dumbledore "at great personal risk"
