that would be "Out of the Silent Planet." a good read. "perelandra" is much, much better, though.

Not read Tad Williams but just finished the first book in Hobb's Farseer-triology, a good read.

I haven't read any Tad Williams, but I've read all of Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy, and I loved it. I then went on to read her 'Tawny Man' Trilogy and I think that was a major mistake. It's a continuation of the Farseer Trilogy, but it gets weirder and I lost interest. I still haven't read the last book of that trilogy because it I doubt I'd like it.

I have read the Farseer first book by Hobb and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn saga by Tad Williams. Just acquired his Otherland books too.
For me, I would say, Tad Williams is better. The first book [by hobb] is kind of strange. Though the story isn't bad at all and her chracterization is great. Tad Williams sometimes reminds me of Tolkien and I love the Trolls!

I hope Otherland would be as good as Memory, Sorrow and Thorn saga was.

Thanks Beleg. I was beginning to think that no-one else had read Tad Williams. I think you'll enjoy the scope of the Otherland series. It gets very weird at the end though, which I guess could be construed as weakness. But an enjoyable series, with an interesting/different POV from the usual assortment of fantasy/sci-fi. So far though, it seems to me that his Sorrow series is the better of the two series, but they're both very DIFFERENT.

edit: hey, wow, we have another member from the 'dark continent'. Welcome! Oh, have you read Dune?

Your are welcome.
I guess Melko Belcha [Sp?] has read Tad Williams too and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a favorite of his.

Otherland looks nice, though I have to say Tad William's war writing is no where near writers like Sebastian Faulks etc.
Memory, Sorow and Thorn I guess is pure fantasy, while Otherland is a fine mesh of Cyberpunk/Cybernatics, Fantasy and mainstream fiction.

Thank you! But since when has Asia become a Dark Continent? I thought the title was reserved for Africa?
On the risk of being labeled a heretic , I'd say I haven't read Dune mainly because I couldn't get past the first few pages.
But now that I have read a couple of other threads [Dune seems to be a favorite of folks here], I guess I'll give it a second, longer try and go on to about 100-150 pages.

Er... yes well, we NZers aren't exactly known for our geography. Actually, I don't think I've heard of Africa as the 'dark continent', I was just applying it to pakistan, since you have....well, skin slightly darker than mine.

Infidel! Actually, there's a reason that people are reading Dune, and it might have something to do with me bullying them...

Yes, the Otherland series is a bit of a mish-mash. It gets progressively more fantasy-ish as well, which is why I liked it so much. Also, there's a development of cultures that you don't necessarily see in sci-fi/mainstream. It is particularly interesting to follow the development of Xabbu! and Renie's characters - though it was hard to imagine what Xabbu! looked like, I must admit.

Or if you are living on a seaport, then fish.

Hehe, I am liking Xabbu! Although I have to agree that it is hard to imagine his looks. Perhaps part of purpose behind the mention of the Bushman was to generate more intrest in people? Tad Williams did say something to the effect that he would be really happy to see people taking more intrest in them after reading the books. [hugely Rephrased]

I just bought 'The Golden Ass' by Apuleius. It's a classic, apparently. Our lecturer for Virgil and Catullus told us it was good, and you know, I am actually getting into it. Although I still think I spelled Apuleius wrong...
