Yeah, isn't there a bit where he puzzles over the usage of "Gee Whiz!"

Also, White seems to have been associated with Cambridge, though am not sure of the details; that might have put him completely out of JRRT's universe.

As hobinator said in an earlier reply, the third disk in the extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring DVD package has a nice bit of information regarding Tolkien.

I think it is an important and funny fact that Tolkien first concidered Middle-earth to be England and then dropped this idea completely.
Do you all remember the introduction in the LOTR? (if it is included in the books you have). There he mentiones that LOTR has not allegory at all.

The elves sailing West = Emigrating Europeans who go to America?
The War of the Ring, The Western countries versus the Eastern ones = The Cold War? The Two Towers = World Trade Center? Though LotR was written before WTC was even concidered to be built, and I think it was written before the Cold War as well. No, even though there are somethings which ressembles real events, Tolkien didn't have any allegories at all.

O this thread has turned around quite remarkably.
I have a crazy idea. Why dont we devide Earth to resemble the various places in Middle Earth? Like Gondor could be Eurorope. Mordor - Afghanistan extending till Iraq, and Pakistan on the East. I think i will try to do this. Let us all prepare our maps, and share it. Lets see who gets the best one.

But anyway, I don't want to have a politic discussion about George W. Bush. that could upset some people.
