I got the impression that elves needed food but could be sustained with FAR less for FAR longer

Sorry for the long delayed information. But better late then never. The infromation as the one before is out of The History of Middle-Earth volume 10: Morgoth's Ring chapter The Annals of Aman and The History of Middle-Earth volume 11: The War of the Jewels chapter The Grey Annals.

Feanor left Fingolfin in the valian year 1497 and the moon and sun rosed in the valian year 1500.

Since these dates cover a time of exactly 9.582 years of the sun and we can't know when in this long time these things hapend, the wandering of Fingolfins poeple ofer the ice can have lasted for a time between 19.164 and 28.746 years of the sun.
