When we first 'see' Smaug, how is he descriped?

Sorry for any delay.

A wee hint may be in order . . . . .
. . . . Thorin told of the location where the great dragon's breed.

Nagothrond was the home of Glaurung, who was bred by Morgoth out of the pits of Angband there issued the winged dragons

yes, but all answers for questions on this thread must be from the Hobbit.

Since Thorin is the one who mentions the place, maybe we should consider that this particular question involves not what is absolute (per Tolkein), but what is considered true by the dwarves . . .

So, maybe the proper question should be, "Where do the dwarves, particularly Thorin, believe that the great dragons bred, as stated by Thorin in the Hobbit?"

Well Thorins explanation at the party says "there were a lot of dragons in the North in those days". but I don't see anything more specific.

OK, I think it's time to call this question a bust.

During the Unexpected Party, Thorin states after glancing at the map, "I don't see that this will help much. I remember the Mountain well enough and the lands about it. And I know where Mirkwood is, and the Withered Heath where the great dragons bred."

Which character stated that he would never eat apples again?

Doesn't look like this question is going well either . . .

hint: the character made the statement after being cooped up in a barrel . . .
