yep, its true. He's better than Tchaikovsky.
a lot of russian composers are better than Tchaikovsky.
in fact, out of the two most celebrated composers of russia, not one is Tchaikovsky. they are Shostakovich and Prokofiev.
Tchaikovsky is famous because of all his awsome ballets. especcially the Nutcracker.

The one thing I hate about Rusian composers is the fact that I can never pronounce their names!

thats it. I've had enough of this prejudice.
every single classical music lover I've talked with; hates Shostakovich,Mahler,Prokofiev....all the post modernists.
makes me sick!
and I have had ENOUGH OF IT!
I'm starting a "anti-prejudicy against post-modernist composers" team.
my team will go and raid those evil anti-postmodernists boards.

anyone interested?
btw, the only post moderninsts i dont like are Stravinsky's lot. but that is only because they're music is boring.

Jumping in, yee haa!

Hector and I were pming about classical music, so I thought I'd join the thread!

I think Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff, is so awesome! Who has heard it? I think it's a choral-symphonic work that rivals the greatness of Handel's Messiah (which I haven't heard in ages, so maybe that's not a fair comparison.) Carmina Burana has a lot of soloists, and probably more symphony action than the Messiah.
I'm not saying I don't like the Messiah - my dad sang in it once and I think it's great. I'm just comparing two great works that I think have similarities.

If you don't like boring music Hector, how do you feel about Strauss' endless waltzes? Or what about Wagner's operas? They were so long some of them had dinner breaks! At least he wrote Ride of the Valkries (sp?), but that might be an excerpt from an otherwise boring opera. You can guess how I feel about them.

In answer to the Dead Russain Composer Test..... (link above):

I am Dmitri Shostakovich! Enemy of Stalin, boy (er, actually girl) genius, and mocker of the Soviet System! Harry Potter stole my glasses and broke them. Jerk.

It's quite the brilliant little quiz I found, if you answer vodka to every one you get the guy who wrote Night on Bald Mountain. I never had met a Rakmoninov until Hector.

As for the post-modernists, I do love Shostakovich. As for Mahler and Prokofiev, I admit I've never heard anything by them.
Does anyone know of the minimalist music going on in the 60's or 70's? And an interesting note on Schoenberg- he was friend with artist Kandinsky, and did some paintings himself. We need an Art History thread.

And Nurvingiel, congratulations on being a Shostakovich!! Truly one of the best.

Hey Ornelire! have you heard?
the berlin philharmonic is in new york city! with some awsome crazy, scraggly haired conductor helming the orchestra.
O how i wish i was there!
Oh thank you very much for informing me, oh I do love Berlin. Sadly, I won't be there when they are *tear*.

hey Nirvingiel, I love Wagner's operas
I dont see them boring like 'stravinsky boring'
I just dont get it. stravinsky doesnt even have melody!
opera is opera.
non-vocal music is different, because the instruments are the stars.
i see the instruments in a symphony(berlioz' "harold in italy" is a good example) as individuals, and the tone of the whole orchestra as the 'mood changer'. i never see this with stravinsky's music...
of course i guess it all comes down to what i like, and what i dont....

I'm sure the music and quality of Wagner's operas is fine, but nothing is interesting after 6 hours! Sat through classes recently? (If you're not in school right now, I'm not looking down on you for it, it just makes a good example.) Urgh.

Why were you curious if anyone got Rimski-korsakov or Shostakovich on the Dead Russain Composer Contest?

I'm Shostakovich, nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah! Joking, of course!

I'm asking you Hector, because I'm not sure: Classical music is a style of music, not an era right? Modern composers can still compose classical music. Then this style is divided into periods like "Baroque" and "Romantic" etc.
