Turtles are very interesting by themselves, but there could be a point.

Perhaps it's like Zelda: Mask of Majora, and the tower is very far out into misty waters. We have to do something (In the game, it's play a certain song) and then the giant turtle comes and gives us a ride.
He could even have palm trees on his back like he did in the game.
