Males are generally easier to identify, they're red or red-black, and the females are yellow or yellow-brownish like this one. I suspect by the contrast in her eyes that she may be a recently hatched female, which I'm told is even more difficult to identify with certainty when I put a similar photo before the experts at the local wildlife photography forum.

(I'm not using the latin names to show off, but I doubt anyone'd find the Dutch names useful, and you can find the correct name in your own language easier with the latin ones than the Dutch or English.)
yeah, i thought it's a Sympetrum-species (no worries about using the scientific names, we have them so we can have common names for species no matter where we're from.. and often, i know the scientific names better than the swedish/finnish/english names anyway :P). i didn't realize it was a female, though, thanks for that!

We have several dragonflies and waterdamsels, including S. striolatum, in our garden, so I have done a little research on them and my parents have gifted me with a lovely Dragonflies of Europe identification guide. Couldn't let it go unused!

I remember one river-side trip with a friend who is a biologist specialised in sweet water invertebrates. She knew all the latin names which I didn't, and I knew a good deal of the common Dutch names. We made a good team that way.

I finally got the moonbow pic from my bro-in-law! Here is my family (minus the oldest, who had to stay home and work ) at around midnight at Lower Yosemite Falls, and the moonbow!

It was the coolest thing - so Tolkien-esque - like a ghost of a rainbow ... in this 2-minute exposure, the colors come out, but in RL it's kind of a ghostly white with occasionally bits of color visible. If you guys ever get a chance to see one, do it!

Just the very notion of a moonbow is so incredibly cool!
It's an amazing pic R*an

It is such a cool notion, isn't it?! And for whatever reason, you seem to be able to get a lot closer to it, too. And it's just so ethereal.

So do moonbows have pots of silver at the end?

that is such a brilliant photo, R*an. i love long exposure photos (especially with water in them), and the waterfall here is very beautiful.. the moonbow is just that extra thing that makes this very special.

i love it.

Thanks! Yes, it was very special, and Yosemite is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I grew up going there every summer, but can't get there much now, and it was sheer chance (or a blessing from God!) that my sister happened upon the moonbow thing and we were there at that exact time!

Here's the moonbow predictions: here

Here's another pic that shows a star ...

It's a lot cooler, but we also wanted a pic showing us there.

It was in the car ...

I love that last pic, Nel - really nice!

Does anyone have some pictures they've taken of the Northern Lights? I've always wanted to see those ... Who around here gets them?

hehe, i'd love to.. i think there should be an increase in solar activity this winter, so if i go north, i'll definately try to get some good photos for you (and me ).

nope, not a leek.. i have altered the colour of the leaves a bit, which makes it a bit more difficult.
