Well, those are all orcs, aren't they? 'Goblins'(I think) was the term used the hobbit that really is the same as 'orcs' They are interchangable i think...unless inoldonil can prove me wrong with a long post Uruk-hui are a type of orc..but bred by saruman..not in the hobbit so what does this have to do with anything? All orcs are pretty darn fierce.

How did Sauron have Uruk Hai in his troops if the were bred by Saruman?
I've believed, that either Saruman got that idea from Mordor and taught it his own or Uruk Hai and Saruman's half-orcs weren't same creatures at all. Which one you rest perfer?

I guess Sauron's orcs and Saruman's orcs were just hanging out with eachother to capture the haflings (Frodo in particuliar)...hey ! but lets not discuss Uruk_hai or Saurman, or Sauron, or anyone from lotr..this is the hobbit forum

For the sake of clarity, Tristan -- I hope you don't mind -- I'll have to touch on some LOTR issues.

I can't disagree with you Hobbit, goblins and Orcs are the same thing.

That Uruk-hai were bred by Saruman is only true of Peter Jackson's adaptation. The Uruk-hai were made by Sauron early on in the Third Age. It is my belief that Azog -- who was responsible for the War of the Dwarves and Orcs -- and Bolg his son (King of the Northern Goblins in Gundabad, slain by Beorn in the Battle of Five Armies) were Uruks. It's the Half-orcs or Goblin-men of Isengard that were devised by Saruman, though in Vol. X of the History of Middle-earth it is revealed that the cunning wizard was rediscovering an old art practiced by the diabolical Melkor in ancient times.

As for the original question, I get the impression the great soldier-orcs were generally more evil than the lesser ones.

Aye. That I had in my mind too, but still at least Treebeard taught some orcs as Sarumans creations. So were they just Uruk Hai, that Treebeard had never seen before, or did Saruman actually mix humans and orcs?

The special Orcs of Saruman's devising were Half-orcs.

So what are uruk-hai exactly? Are they a seperate race...made by Sauron in mockery of the dwarves or something?

No. They were just orcs bred for big combat. A bit like breeding dogs. Only best are allowed to breed.
