I just don't get...

*strange looking lurker shows up again*

Just had to post this.

What is it with people who "don't get" or are confused by LOTR? The story, although long, makes perfect sense the entire time, nor is the basic plot very complicated. What is it with these people? I can understand people who don't get the more "hard core" Tolkien books (Unfinished Tales, and the like), but how on earth can you "not get" LOTR?

What are you referring to? Could you give an example?

*scary music*

*everyone runs and hides in terror*

*says to empty room*

Well, I've got a friend who read LOTR and was "confused" by it. And I've got another friend who read up to about Riddles in the Dark in The Hobbit, and was bored! I was just wondering if y'all knew what is wrong with these people, why don't they get it? Why can't they enjoy some of the best books ever written?

Perhaps it is not their prefered genre. Maybe their friends build it up too much and then are let down when they don't have the same experiences. I know when I talk to those that have never experienced Middle-earth, I talk about it like it is the best thing since sliced bread....I get so into it, I start reliving the whole story.

There are those who can't comprehend day and night. LOTR isn't for everyone. Some enjoy it others study it and some disect it. It's only a story. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

Of course some of us know Hobbits are real! 0]

Re: I just don't get...

Come on now Darth, be reasonable. Can you imagine what it would have been like for the first people to experience sliced bread? It would have been amazing! Think about it! You've got all this bread, and everyone's just eating it before, it's so primitive, you're just breaking pieces off and stuffing it in your mouth. But the first time, to look in wonder on neatly conveniently sliced bread, it must have brought tears to their eyes. They would have lifted up the bread and stared at it, they would have nibbled curiously, and then began eating in delight. This person would introduce the miracle to his friend, and soon enough whole communities would have been eating sliced bread, and comparing their slices with other slices, trading slices and selling and buying slices, figuring out how to make better slices and what tools to use for which bread in order to slice it.

Imagine it! It's the primitive equivalent of apple sauce cubes. Think of that! Now it may sound bizarre, you may wonder what use it would be, but that's what sliced bread was probably like to the ancients. Slice bread? What?! Why?! Apple sauce cubes, folks, mark my words. It will be the best thing since sliced bread.

Re: I just don't get...

Try tearing off a piece of bread from a fresh loaf though, somehow it tastes much better.

On that note, I cut the PERFECT slice of bread a few days ago
