I have read The Hobbit many times and will probably read it many more. i don't think it is really, "childish" but it certaintly isn't as adult as LOTR.

I have to say the talking purse is one of the best bits for me! I just love that talking purse!

I've started reading it aloud together with my daughter (7). We try to read one chapter every day. She likes it! She enjoyed the bad manners and language of the Trolls, and she tried to guess all the riddles from Riddles in the dark. And she can't wait to read about the dragon! While we're reading she often wants to look at the map in LotR and follow Bilbo's travelling route. Good girl!

I tried to read it to my son, he fell asleep. He wasn't too interested ion Bilbo's pantry! I'll try again in a year or two.

Just started reading it to my younger two. It is very obviously a children's book - and the slow start tests the patience of younger children I think. If they get past that, the mix of trolls, giant spiders, goblins, elves, dwarves plus a dragon pretty much guarantees that kids will love it.

"Childishness" aside, the tone is generally quite light too - one can't imagine a troll called William (and talking, bizarrely, some form of Cockney) wandering into LOTR or the Sil!

Unwittingly though a brilliant marketing strategy...hook em by 10 with the Hobbit, give them LOTR in their teens and there's still the Sil to tackle when you're all grown up!

I've taken to listening to the books on CD. I check them out at the library, (I got FoTR CD set on eBay for only 17$!) When I listen, I catch all the details, cause "I" don't skim over them. I can also hear the story, while laying on the couch with my eyes closed! (I'm a lazy one now!) The Hobbit is fun to listen to!

I have Two books of the Hobbit, One the original version and the other a Full-couloured picture version. I have two tapes, again one really old one and one new one but one of the tapes for that one has dissapeared

Wish me luck in finding it!!!
