Clearly a mistranslation, as Legolas would be unfamiliar with the local dialect. What he actually said was "the dwarf f@rts so loud we could shoot him in the ar$e"

Surely the whole point of the comment is that Elves cannot normally see particularly well in the dark?

IE Gimli is so loud that, were they blind, noise alone is enough to allow them to accurately find him and stick an arrow in his beard?

My own opinion is that Elves cannot inherently see in the dark, but they have the ability to see more clearly what is there. IE they can make out small details in the distance, and can also make out shapes etc more clearly in circumstances of limited visibility (eg dusk / mist etc), but they cannot see things in the absence of light.

Can NO one see the forest for the trees???

They could have shot him in the dark because they could have taken aim and shot true based on how LOUD he was!!!

geeeeez!

"Night / Dark / cats eyes / seeing in caves / quote after quote after ****ing quote"

I like being cerebral and anal and thinking things through until "the original topic is so far gone into obliteration it is nothing more than a mere whisper of a thought of a fleeting moment" as much as the next person, ... but COME ON!

Somethings are so simple as to not even warrent the effort it takes to debate the topic.

I love you guys! Your enthusiam is wonderful and well matched.

But something also has to be said for COMMON SENSE!

In the book at Helms Deep, legolas say to Gimli that he wished 'he could have better light for shooting'. If elves could see in the dark then why did he say that?

Gil- galad was an elven king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the mountains and the sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shinig helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in mordor where the shadows are.

If those are his words, that doesn't mean to much because Elves see at night as well as humans do in the day.

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but did you ever consider that he may have been making a sarcastic remark to Gimli's statement? He said "Well, this is one dwarf that she (Galadrial) won't ensnare so easily! I have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox!
Haldir was replying to that.

I don't think Gimli says that in the book
I think it is one of those "lets make the dwarf look really stupid by saying some thing silly" things
I think it could be What Bop said a common Lorien saying.
In the book it says Legolas drops down (he was about to jump up into the tree) in fear and Surprise and he tells the others not to move or speak and then they hear soft laughing above them and then Haldir says the line, so yeah.

When I saw the title of this thread, my first thought was: being born.

Of course, when I say this, I refer to the movie Haldir. I have nothing against Haldir in the book; but the movie Haldir was decidedly un-Elvish.

I am affraid you are partly right, Especialy the part in the extended edition when he says:
Celeborn and Galadriel
In my oppinion he sounds like the three (or however many they were) vultures in Jungle book

But I still think he is Cool !

He meant that they could shoot them in the dark,not necessarily by seeing them,just by hearing them.They could aim and shoot based on the sounds!
