Such a situation - where the speaker is out walking with two others, and they have already walked somewhere in the morning - and they might be challenged - could we be in The Last Battle, with the two again being Eustace and Jill, like they would have been if it had been a Puddleglum quote?

If so, then the speaker would be Tirian.
My guess, too- though I dislike The Last Battle so much that, unlike all the others, I've scarcely re-read it.
