Haldir's mistake

Did he say that the Dwarf breathes so hard we could shoot him in the dark?

If those are his words, that doesn't mean to much because Elves see at night as well as humans do in the day.

"Yes, they are Elves, and they say that you breathe so loud that they could shoot you in the dark." Legolas to Sam in 'Lothlorien'

Haldir simply says in the movie what Legolas says he said in the book.

A-E, I think you have FAR too much time on your hands.

As Martinez brought up in xenite, if they had such good night vision, then why did they use lights?

And as someone else brought up:

Night - twinkly stars
Dark - absense of light.

I agree BoP. He just starts threads for the fun of it. I mean, who doesn't know what brain freeze is?

There is a diffrence between Night and Dark
just wondering where does it say they see in the dark? (I know I probabley sound like an air-head but I can't remember reading it )
and can they see in the dark cave of Shelob?

Another of Tolkien's errors? Maybe for the beauty of light.

Faramir you are just puerile and acerebral. Instead of just complaining, why don't you do a search and see how many post that I have compared too yours. Then go through them and see how many are serious, in jest, and honest queries.

When you do that, come back then say something worth while.

But, I doubt you have the integrity to do so. Or, maybe you just gloss over stuff that is too dense for your sub par discernment which causes you to read what you can glean which obvisouly is minisucle.

Yes, that could well be the case. However, "You breath so loud, I could shoot you in the dark" could be a common saying amongst the Lothlorien elves for all we know.

Faramir: what's with the aggro? You complain about other people whining, and yet you seem to do an awful lot yourself.

My, my, aren't we all a little edgy here.....

Cats can't see in the complete dark either, so I don't see why elves should be able to. (oookay some of Eärniels most brilliant reasonings. )

Me thinks the elves wanted to say that they could have shot him blindfolded, only aiming at the sound but 'in the dark' sounds so much cooler.

I wish to pass on a compliment to you. For the last few months you have taken on a new demeanor. It's like you matured overnight. Keep up the good work.

Well, during Helm's Deep, Legolas complains along the lines of "if it weren't so dark, I could shoot my arrows better". Helm's Deep is during the night, so twinkly stars, but he mentioned how the darkness of night was hindering him.

Guess you'd have to go back to the cats theory. Cats can see better in dimmer light than us, but they can't see in the pure dark, and they see better during the day, with brighter lights.

Well isn't Helm's Deep rainy? Or has the movie melted my mind?
If it was stormy at Helm's then there would be no twinkly stars.
AND LOVE THE CAT THEORY! I had to get out of the room so I could breathe!
This sounds like it's becoming another "Do Balrogs have wings" situation.

Here are some relevant quotes from the text.

Quote:
'But it is still dark,' said Gimli. 'Even Legolas on a hill-top could not see them till the Sun is up.'
'I fear they have passed beyond my sight from hill or plain, under moon or sun,' said Legolas.
Quote:
'It is likely enough,' said Aragorn; 'yet I am not sure. I am thinking of the horses. You said last night, Gimli, that they were scared away. But I did not think so. Did you hear them, Legolas? Did they sound to you like beasts in terror?'
'No,' said Legolas. 'I heard them clearly. But for the darkness and our own fear I should have guessed that they were beasts wild with some sudden gladness. They spoke as horses will when they meet a friend that they have long missed.'
Quote:
'Many miles lie between,' said Legolas, gazing thither and shading his eyes with his long hand. 'I can see a darkness. There are shapes moving in it, great shapes far away upon the bank of the river; but what they are I cannot tell. It is not mist or cloud that defeats my eyes: there is a veiling shadow that some power lays upon the land, and it marches slowly down stream. It is as if the twilight under endless trees were flowing
downwards from the hills.'
And I think this is the quote you asked for.

Quote:
'I must go and seek some arrows,' said Legolas. 'Would that this nightwould end, and I could have better light for shooting.'
Thank you, Afro-Elf.
