Gore and IPCC win Nobel Prize
Al Gore and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Wow, he got the prize quickly. Although he's been involved with environmental problems for some time, it was still quite recently that "an Inconvenient Truth" hit theaters.
This is the first time I've successfully guessed a Nobel prize laureate in advance! I said Al Gore would win the Peace prize this year  Congrats to the IPCC too!

While I think finally putting climate change and global warming in the public eye is an admirable acchievement, I do wonder whether the Nobel Prize for Peace isn't a bit too soon or a bit miscast. Global warming and peace are two different things. They definitely deserve recognition, but I'm not sure whether the Nobel Prize of Peace is the right one.
But congratulations for both the IPCC and Al Gore all the same.

The Nobel Committee has certainly broadened its definition of peacemaking and I they're very right to do so. Peace, poverty and environmental issues are dependent of one another and in recent years that has been reflected by awarding the peaceprize to Wangari Maathai (in 2004, for her contributions to sustainable development in Africa) and the Grameen Bank (in 2006, for countering poverty in Bangladesh).
So I say kudos to the Nobel Committee for acknowledging that peace is less likely to be achieved if there's poverty and environmental problems.

Very good, overall. Lots of debates in college
 . I'm writing papers right now about people who change from homosexuality to heterosexuality, and about Islamic extremism. Those are very enjoyable pursuits and are broadening my arsenal of data to use in future debates and discussions on those subjects. I'm having lots of fun and am doing a great deal of studying. Today is an aberation (how does one spell "aberation"?). I feel extremely nasty and mean today *mopes and whines*. I feel worse today than I have in months *weeps piteously*. I've got to go to the Venting Thread. But I'm glad you asked . You got me thinking about the good things that have been going on with me lately, and that has lifted my spirits dramatically. Actually, I don't think I'll go to the Venting Thread after all.Consider your good deed for the day (or yesterday  ) done!

It's absurd to think that Gore got the Peace prize only because of his movie. That's what Academy Awards are for.
He's done a lot more than that in the past few decades. He's had hearings in the Senate, published editorials on climate change and in many ways tried to draw attention to the environment. And everyone remembers the Live Earth concerts this summer. The Nobel Prize awarders took all of his past actions into account when they awarded him, not just his movie.

As I've said before, population growth will be the biggest problem we have to deal with in the next 100 years, and global warming is only a minor symptom of that.
But we won't, because the facts are too hard to swallow for most.

While there's snow in Greece I can say that technically a big part of Scandinavia didn't have any winter this year. According to Swedish and Finnish meteorological definition, winter is the time of the year when the mean temperature remain steady at 0 ºC or below.
Well, that didn't happen this year. And since the spring criteria haven't all been met yet, it's still autumn over here Funny. A few years ago when there was snow chaos in Medditerranean Europe, we had a quite warm winter up north in Scandinavia too. Bizarre.

So we get some snow in January and inked is ready to use that as proof that global warming is a myth? Of course the January to January temp drop was significant. Know why? Not because its been an extra frigid January THIS year but because LAST January was the hottest on record… a full 0.23 degrees Celsius warmer than the previous record. So its hard to do worse than the worst number tricks and misrepresentations aside…
 Why in the world would you champion what essentially amounts to a single month’s temperature and ignore the fact that 8 of the past 10 years have been THE HOTTEST ON RECORD? How can you explain that away with snow in Greece exactly? And what was all that about more ice cover then ever? Is he looking at Earth or Mars? Or is he ignoring certain parts of the world entirely… The fact is summer sea-ice in the Arctic Ocean shrank dramatically last year (a whopping 23%!). For the first time in recorded human history the Northwest Passage opened up to ships which you may recall caused a scramble for territory claims in the “new global warming” era of artic land speculation… Anything for political gamesmenship I guess… Or corporate elegance…
