Hobbit least liked

Would you all agree with me that the hobbit is the least talked about book of middle earth. I think it could be my 2nd fave and after all it was what bought me into the world of tolkien

i think that the least talked about book about middle-earth would prolly be one of the HoMe's or something like 'The Tolkien Miscellany' which is a book i have that has alot of his writings like Smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and a few more. One of those or a book by some random tolkien scholar.

oh yeah, my friend had to do a book study on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, he said that he didn't like it as much as LoTR, but really, who would expect him to?

I thought this thread was about the our least-favorite hobbit. Duh!

BTW for me that would be Ted Sandyman. He's always trying to puff himself up at the expense of others. Sheesh.

i'm assuming that you're speaking to me, since i'm the only one that i am aware of that has a Cloud avatar, and it is pretty cool, but anyway, back on topic... I wouldn't say that the Hobbit is the least liked of the books, maybe most under-appreciated, or least talked about

Hobbit is awsome at introducing a new reader to Tolkien. Especially for kids. You can read a little bit to them each night before they go to bed, they'll look forward to it and be eager to read the LOTR.

i agree.. the hobbit isn't given the coverage it deserves even though it is a major piece of the puzzle that makes up the third age.. the most obvious reason could be the fact that it was introduced as a children's book originally and therefore people find it hard to fully associate the text with the lord of the rings..... what do YOU think?

Ah, first post welcome. I totally agree with you. It is good on its own, but it doesn't match up with the rest.

Yeh, I think that's the problem really. While LOTR is regarded as an adult book that's also suitable for younger readers, The Hobbit is still thought of as a children's book. The writing style is ceratinly less adult although the magic the book weaves is just as wonderful and it ceratinly forms a crucial part of the Ring story.

As to it being the least loved of Tolkien's works, I wouldn't agree. I think it's a brilliant book. Something like Farmer Giles of Ham or Smith of Wooton Major are probably more deserving of the title.
