Hobbit and Dwarf unions possible?

Not that that could produce offspring, but it just seems like the most likely unions between the free peoples.

I don't think there would be a union unless there was the chance of producing offspring. But it's... possible.

They might get married for love but not be able to produce offspring being of difference species.

Hobbits and men is more likely, since they're the same specie.

Why? They don't interact much, and they certainly don't have common interests. Gardening vs mining? I agree with Fat Middle: hobbits and men are far more likely.

Stoors got along well with Men

Fallohides got along well with Elves.

The Prologue to The Lord of the Rings tells us that the Harfoots dwelt in highlands and hills and had much to do with Dwarves

There is a size problem about mating between Hobbits and Men.

Their height is variable, ranging between two and four feet of our measure. A six foot man and a two foot Hobbit is a tad extreme.
A REALLY tall Hobbit and a REALLY short man maybe.

Dwarves are are not THAT much taller than Hobbits. Maybe a Dwarf/ Harfoot match?

Yeah, I know that stuff already, and I still think you're making a gigantic leap over a very very wide chasm. They don't have anything in common, and they're culturally separated. Physiologically: why would a hobbit male mate with something that has a beard when beards aren't that common an occurance within Hobbit culture? I don't think height is a good enough indicator of compatiblility. Besides, you get people marrying 4 ft midgets all the time, and I can't imagine that there would be too much of a problem in that area.

Well, again the only support I can give is this

It is the MUCH TO DO WITH part that sticks out.

I was thinking Male Dwarf/ Female Hobbit.

So? They were still, on the whole, culturally and physiologically separated. Sorry, but I just don't see it.

Remember- Elves had 'much to do' with humans- and yet you can count on one hand the number of intermarraiges between them.

Wayfarer, you are just barely right. In Tolkien's works, there were exactly five intermarriages mentioned:
  • Beren vs. Lúthien
  • Tuor vs. Idril
  • Earendil vs. Elwing
  • Aragorn vs. Arwen
  • Imrazor vs. Mithrellas

And I am sure there were at least some unmentioned unions.

I thought Earendil and Elwing were both Half-elven? And that both of them chose to belong to the Firstborn?

But remember, male Hobbits don't wear beards, either. I would think it would be, if not the same, not all that different for this union.

But if it were to happen, it'd basically have to be male dwarf/female hobbit, as I think the Dwarves don't let there women travel much, do they?

But I still don't think it'd happen.

i too am just not seeing this. hobbits remind me of children of the earth, and dwarves just go and tear it up. also hobbits are cute, dwarves are nasty. a lot of hobbit culture has to do with being accepted in their society and how would a hobbit be accepted bringing a bunch of dwarves into the Shire? people talked about Frodo and Bilbo just conversing with dwarves. think of the stir if they had married one!

What is the textual basis of this? I don't recall it. It would nice if you could point it out.
