The order in which to read the Star Wars novels!

I begun with A splinter of Mind's eye, then I read Shadows of the Empire, Truce at Bakura and have just begun reading The Courtship of Princess Leia. In beginning of Courtship I noticed that Han had come back from a mission against the Imperial Warlord Zsinj 5 months ago. Of the X-wing novels one is called Iron Fist (Zsinj's Star Destroyer) and I wonder if it's essential to read that one before Courtship? or if I should plow through all nine of the x-wing novels before Courtship. What's your opinion?

I read a few of those, but not nearly enough to answer your question off the top of my head. I think you can find the order printed on the inside of the covers...

You don't have to read the X-Wing Novels in any certain order with the other books, they normally make sense if you just read them as a separte series. They take place in between other books so its hard to say which book goes where.

You can never go wrong with reading the books in order of when they were published, because that's how the fans originally experienced them. The same question could apply to the original trilogy vs. the prequels once both sets are complete.

I read pretty much the entire "first series" of the post-RotJ Expanded Universe, but I never got into that second set that started with "Vector Prime."

I started with "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn, and then finished that trilogy. That was the first EU book of the 90s. "Splinter of the Mind's Eye," as I recall, was one of the few books published around the time of the original trilogy. I personally found that set to be dull.

After that I think I just followed the "chronology" that listed the relative time of each book. The X-wing series wasn't complete, so I didn't even have the option of reading that in its entirety before moving on.

I AM reading the books according to the Chronology in "Edge of victory I and II". So the next ones will be Zanh's trilogy with Heir to the Empire, Dark Force rising and The Last Command and after that The Jedi Academy-trilogy and after that Children of the Jedi, Dark Saber & Planet of Twilight, but I will alternate between them and the X-Wing novels, most likely (this is my current decision).

Well, I'm going to read them anyway, since not doing so will most probably make reading the following novels hard to understand.

Actually I don't think it will. Here's all you need to know:

Luke falls in love with Callista.
There's a huge ship called the Eye of Palpatine.
Callista dies to blow it up.
She borrows someone else's body and comes back to life.
She loses her Force powers.
Daala gets a Super Star Destroyer.
Callista dies to blow it up (except she doesn't really die).
Callista is embarrased cuz she cant feel the force so she runs away.

End of story.
(oh, and the Hutts try and build a death star but its defective so it blows up.)
(and they kill Crix Madine; that was a bummer.)

In fact, that's way more than you need to know.
