Nazgul Anduril

Hello site.Ok would u consider anduril a (magical) sword.Everyone i have talk to has said its not. That when the noldor elves of rivendell reforged it (narsil) they brought it back to its original state.Yet it glows with a suden flame through out the lotr.Is the power in the blade or in the elvish sheath.Or is there no (magic) at all in it,and im just seening things.

I think it might be magical. Narsil was able to injure Sauron, so it had to be special, and Anduril is Narsil reforged.

I agree with entss and CelebrÃ*an, it was definitely a magical sword (originally of Dwarf-make). The Dwarves seem to have been fond of putting light into objects they made. They meshed the light of star, moon and sun in their jewels, armor and weapons. Andúril is like that, and it's properties and attributes seem to grand as not to be magical.

Yes thats what i always thought. It glows like flame in sunlight and white flame in moonlight.Tell that to the onering.net green books staff. They say that the elves of rivendel only brought it back to its orginal state.NO glowing or nothing. They say that they didn't want to ruin telchar's original design.Whats up with that.

I think you don't need a special sword to kill Sauron, although he was a maia... he had a boddy and he wasn't able to escape from it. I think every sword could, when it hearts in the right place, to destroy Sauron.

I do think Narsil was magical before the elves of Rivendel made it again. (don't understand me wrong)

Yes the screen shots for the lord of the rings ps2 game prove the glowing blade of anduril.I don't like the glowing blue at night though it should be white like the moon. But the red in sunlight is right on the money.

I am highly skeptical of anyone that claims the movies or console games 'prove' anything tolkien-related.

I think Tolkien never explicitly called Anduril magic. However we can see its history and how it is depicted in LotR. There is also an etymological comment by Tolkien about the origins of the name Anduril, and this comment strongly suggests that it was made with magic and for great purposes. But I can´t give you the reference now because I have to RUSH!

Nazgul prince:

You miss the point entirely. Basing your viewpoint on the game or movies puts you in the dangerous position of thinking Arwen carried a sword and Borimir actually handled the ring.

Being based on the books does not give them authority.

Now, if you really want to make a case, I suggest you base your statements on the books-which clearly say that narsil flamed brightly on several occasions.

Sorry, made a mistake here. I was actually thinking of the original sword.

Quote:
The origins of Narsil's name are complex, and contain an element of symbolism. Tolkien himself described the name's derivation in his Letters:
'Narsil is a name composed of 2 basic stems without variation or adjuncts: vNAR 'fire', & vTHIL 'white light'. It thus symbolised the chief heavenly lights, as enemies of darkness, Sun (Anar) and Moon (in Q) Isil.'
(from The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien No 347, dated 1972)
And my quote is from the Encyclopedia of Arda.

Wayferer i think that Nazgul Prince is right to base some things off the Movie and Game... the people that produce those things would have researched tolkien stuff beyond your knowledge of the book Wayferer...

You know not of what you speak, nor whom you speak to when you say such things. Shannon is far more knowledgable in the matter of Tolkien's works than Peter Jackson will ever be. You cannot base conclusions concerning Tolkien's world on Peter Jackson's world or a video game world, or any other world, save Tolkien's world. Wayfarer studies Tolkien's works, and he keeps his ideas within that framework and he is right in doing so.

Some of these makers of Tolkien-related movies and games would do well to hear a piece of Wayfarer's mind, or another mind like his.
